Position Summary

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: coordination of instructional programs, counseling services and/or teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; administering diagnostic testing to determine eligibility for learning disabilities services; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Typical Duties

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with DSPS faculty and staff to provide effective assessment, orientation, counseling, academic/career planning, and educational programs and services to students with disabilities.
  • Developing individual and group counseling processes to assist students in making decisions regarding AA/AS, transfer, and occupational/career goals.
  • Providing counseling and academic advising to students with disabilities as required.
  • Reviewing or providing for diagnostic assessment of students with disabilities (physical, communicative, learning, psychological, acquired brain injured).
  • Determining eligibility for support services and providing specialized advisement to students with disabilities as needed.
  • Assisting faculty in accommodating the academic needs of students with disabilities.
  • Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty and staff, and with other college programs to support student success.
  • Coordinating with the DSPS Supervisor and Assistive Technology (AT) Instructional Assistant as it relates to AT Lab planning, activities, and evaluation. Researching and recommending equipment purchases.
  • Promoting effective learning through the use of assistive technology, alternative learning environments, and student learning outcomes of student success.
  • Providing training for community groups, faculty, and staff to promote an awareness of the special needs of disabled students and to develop techniques for assisting students with disabilities.
  • Facilitating and promoting campus-wide awareness of adaptive technology, available resources, and disability related issues to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Surveying the needs of present and prospective students with disabilities.
  • Preparing, implementing, and monitoring annual DSPS program plans and reports as required, ensuring compliance with laws, mandates, and regulations.
  • Coordinating and monitoring the DSPS budget with the DSPS Supervisor.
  • Monitoring expenditures, preparing, and submitting required state, federal and institutional reports.
  • Participating in division/department budget meetings.
  • Collecting and processing required data that will assist in the development of appropriate funding.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with instructional areas, student services, outreach centers, feeder high schools, neighboring colleges and universities, state, county, and community agencies.
  • Developing and implementing a strategic plan to inform prospective students who may qualify for DSPS services and coordinating with college outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Advising and consulting with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Equity Officer, other campus staff, and the District Office, regarding the interpretation and implementation of ADA regulations.
  • Assisting the Dean and College Operations manager with architectural barrier removal planning and review.
  • Maintaining currency with trends and developments in the field through appropriate literature, conferences, regional meetings, professional organizations, and other information sources.
  • Serving on college committees and advocating on behalf of students with disabilities.
  • Coordinating the Sacramento City College DSPS Advisory Committee.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The assignment between these two roles may be adjusted based on student, department, and program needs.



Minimum Qualifications

1. Have a master's in degree in rehabilitation counseling; OR master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling; OR a bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a postsecondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or
(B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by June 30, 2025.

2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
