Position Overview

Essential Job Duties
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will provide scientific and technical support in the area of weather and climate extremes science and data analysis. Primary duties will be in support of projects that are investigating historical trends and future projections of weather and climate extremes characteristics. Key objectives include increasing the fundamental understanding of the meteorological mechanisms responsible for historical trends and applying this understanding to future projections.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will contribute to ongoing research investigating weather and climate extremes. One area of emphasis is on identifying and characterizing the meteorological mechanisms for historical extreme precipitation events and applying this increased understanding to estimates of future changes in extreme precipitation design values. This research includes extensive analysis of various datasets, including historical station observations (Global Historical Climatology Network daily and hourly), reanalyses (e.g. ERA5, MERRA-2), global and regional climate model simulations (e.g. CMIP6, NA- CORDEX). Machine learning tools are being applied to these datasets to accelerate our research. This increased knowledge is being used to provide better future estimates of changes in engineering design including precipitation frequency design values (e.g. Intensity-Duration-Frequency curves).

This position is located in Asheville, NC.
