The US base salary range for this full-time position is $165,000 - $375,000 plus bonus eligibility and other elements of our total rewards package. The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role. Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.In addition to base pay, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

The bnsf | tech departmentdrives innovation and efficiency by developing and maintaining advanced technological solutions across the network. This team ensures a robust IT infrastructure, supports critical applications, and enhances cybersecurity measures. Their expertise is essential in optimizing operations and enabling BNSF to deliver reliable, cutting-edge transportation services.

As a Sr. PaaS Engineer, you will:

  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of scalable PaaS systems.

  • Develop and prototype new PaaS landscapes to meet evolving business and technical requirements.

  • Support efforts to transition towards open-source equivalents.

  • Develop in-house solutions where necessary.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.

  • Elevate the quality of engineering practices through design sessions and code reviews.

  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications.

  • Identify and address bottlenecks and bugs, devising solutions to mitigate these issues.

  • Implement and manage rigorous testing processes.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, processes, and procedures.

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends.

  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration throughout the software lifecycle to solve complex problems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • I am CURRENTLY authorized to work in the US.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience in data and software engineering.

  • Sound knowledge of programming languages Java, Python, Terraform

  • Deep understanding of technologies such as SQL, NoSQL, SQL Server,

  • Hands on experience with content management and streaming platform such as Cassandra, Kafka, IBM MQ, AMQ, Informatica, SharePoint, FileNet, OpenText.

  • Proficiency in at least 2 technologies such as Db2 LUW, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MarkLogic, Cassandra, Kafka, IBM MQ, AMQ, Informatica, SharePoint, FileNet, OpenText.

  • Proficiency in at least 2 open-source data platforms such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Alfresco, Nuxeo, Apache NiFi, Apache Airflow, and RabbitMQ.

  • Experience in deploying and managing applications in cloud environments leveraging AWS native platforms; Aurora, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Keyspaces, Timestream, Glue, and Message Services.

  • Knowledge of data structures and algorithms, with practical experience in optimizing performance and scalability.

  • Strong problem-solving ability, with a history of identifying and resolving technical issues.

  • Background in debugging, analyzing, and resolving performance bottlenecks in applications.

  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development lifecycle.

  • Experience with testing methodologies.

  • Proficiency in event-driven and microservices architecture patterns.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively.

  • Deep understanding of SQL tuning, optimization, and performance scaling.

  • Implement security protocols such as encryption, authentication, and authorization.

  • Conduct security audits and vulnerability assessments to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist in developing policies for data protection and access control.

  • Develop and optimize data pipelines to support AI and ML models.

  • Implement data preprocessing and transformation processes to ensure datasets are high-quality and accessible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to leverage open-source database and data integration tools effectively.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.

  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and continuous improvement within engineering teams.
