The Endoscopy Unit at UNC Health Wayne is a specialized unit committed to delivering high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. We provide a comprehensive array of services, including upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, and other minimally invasive procedures for adult patients, both inpatient and outpatient, with gastrointestinal and pulmonary conditions. Our unit features two procedure suites and eight pre-procedure and post-procedure bays, all staffed by a dedicated team of endoscopy-trained nurses, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, and support personnel. Standard shifts typically consist of 8-hour day periods, with on-call coverage available. Our team employs advanced endoscopic technologies, such as high-definition scopes and real-time imaging systems, to ensure precise diagnostics and effective treatments. Nursing staff concentrate on patient preparation, procedural documentation, and post-procedure recovery, while support staff oversee scope cleaning and disinfection, as well as assistance during procedures. We foster a culture that prioritizes safe, patient-centered care and continuous improvement, supported by strong interdepartmental collaboration to facilitate seamless patient experiences. Summary:
The Endoscopy Technician-Nursing Assistant I is a member of the patient care team who, under the supervision of the RN, assists physicians during operative and invasive procedures, provides direct patient care, and cleans and cares for endoscopes and other endoscopy equipment.
Responsibilities:
1.Assists physicians with endoscopic procedures under supervision of the registered nurse. Utilizes instruments during procedures. Assists with positioning of patient.
2.Assists with collection and preparation of endoscopy specimens. Transports specimens and equipment as needed.
3.Operates and cleans equipment used during procedures.
4.Uses knowledge of the scope and accessory equipment. Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment according to policy, procedures and manufacturer's instructions. Packages and labels accessories for sterilization.
5.Assists with cleaning endoscopy areas as needed.
6.Assists with the delivery of direct nursing care as directed.
7.Accurately documents patient care as provided and according to unit specific standards.
8.Demonstrates a cooperative nature with physicians and nurses while responding to needs and requirements of patients or families.
9.Promotes effective communication between patients, teammates, physicians, and visitors.
10.Performs clerical duties as needed, such as answering phones and relaying messages correctly. May assist nurse with making post-procedure phone calls as needed. May assist with scheduling of procedures and notify appropriate department.
11.Ensures adequate supplies are stocked for the department.
12.Understands and complies with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
13.Completes continuing education, professional development and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
14.Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.
15. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients.
16.Ensures the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care for patients.
17.Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations. Recognizes signs and symptoms of distress and promptly notifies appropriate teammates. Obtains needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner. Participates in CPR or other needed emergency care within their scope of practice.
18.Applies knowledge of principles of infection control and standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

Education
*Completion of an approved surgical or operating room technician course, or current listing on the NC Nurse Aide II Registry preferred.
*High School graduate or equivalent required.
Licensure/Certification
*Current Listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry required.
*Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
Experience
At least one year of relevant experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
*Ability to provide excellent patient and customer care to all patients and their visitors as well as internal and external teammates
*Good interpersonal skills.
*Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
*Able to learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of Epic/EMR is helpful.
Valid NC Driver's License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
