Description

BlueHalo has an immediate opening for a Vision Intern to support the Flash and Laser Airborne Protection Systems (FLAPS) program. This position will be located at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate's Photonic Materials Branch, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH.

The FLAPS program involves developing aircrew eye protection to mitigate visual hazards, like flash blindness and laser glare, to ensure effective performance in contested environments. Technology development encompasses advanced filtering technologies across multiple wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest and basic classwork in vision science and the interaction between eyes and brain. Representative studies may include:



  • Investigating the subjective blur that is observed in digital night vision devices.

    • refining the design of the protocol and experimental set up
    • characterizing contrast sensitivity thresholds to predict which temporal and spatial frequencies to probe
    • measure variable display parameters to bound thresholds


  • Investigating the functional impact of laser eye protection on subjects with abnormal color vision

    • Introduction to characterization of visible gamut on display
    • Introduction to genomics of Color Vision Deficiency
    • Measure color vision using myriad tests


  • Vestibular-Optokinetic reflex when using virtual reality

    • Understand gain settings of standard headsets
    • familiarization with motion-sickness susceptibility questionnaire
    • measure individual gain of subjects using dynamic visual scenario




Qualifications:



  • Initial classwork in anatomy, eye structure, vision and brain/eye interaction
  • Due to the nature of this role U.S. citizenship is required.
