Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced ten Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The hiring team based in Murray Hill, NJ (USA), performs groundbreaking research for systems, systems science, and cybersecurity to advance the state of the art in communications systems and technologies.

We design networking solutions to accelerate and secure the execution of large-scale distributed applications and AI workflows, while enabling the virtualization of industrial automation systems through deterministic communication. Our work includes developing cognitive multi-agent systems and advanced knowledge processing methods to optimize network operations. We explore state-of-the-art techniques and apply network science principles to shape the next generation of networks.


  • Research to analyze and predict the behavior and performance of complex network systems.
  • Explore new challenges in network-computing systems, security, and AI-driven network frameworks.
  • Develop cognitive network solutions and build proof-of-concept systems with reusable software assets.
  • Publish research, create intellectual property, and present findings to internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with global researchers, academic partners, and business units to drive innovation and product incubation.

We are looking for a motivated research scientist with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Strong foundation in analytical methods and mathematical modeling of complex systems and networks
  • Solid research background in network-compute systems, including IP networking, distributed systems, cloud systems, Machine Learning systems, and cybersecurity technologies
  • Proven experience in scientific computing and programming, especially in developing real-time networking software and distributed software architectures
  • Experience with Linux OS and/or network-oriented operating systems

Additionally, you have

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present research to both academic and industry audiences
  • A self-driven attitude, unwavering commitment to team goals, and enthusiasm for tackling new challenges
  • Previous Nokia intern or co-op experience would be a plus
