A Brief Overview

This supervisor position is Mon-Fri- 8-4:30- this could vary. Required is 3 years PFT, 2y expereince in care of neonatal/pediatrics, and 2y supervisory/leadership expereince.
The Supervisor of the Pulmonary Function Lab provides leadership and directs day-to-day activities while providing supervision of clinical staff of the lab. The supervisor organizes and allocates work schedules to team members, monitors quality initiatives and performs testing as well as data analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting lab equipment. This role provides education/training and sets up in services for technical staff. The Supervisor will work with the Manager to aid in responsibilities for personnel aspects of the Pulmonary Function Lab including job descriptions, interviews, completion of employee evaluations, disciplinary action, organizing work schedules, record keeping, and other duties when necessary. This role is responsible for and deploys lab strategies designed to meet defined unit and CHOP clinical, financial and quality initiatives and associated performance and outcome targets.

What you will do

  • Financial Stewardship
  • Executes and monitors systems to assure consistent and appropriate resource assignment and utilization.
  • Partners with Pulmonary Function Lab Manager to identify and execute annual unit-based quality improvement initiatives that result in a measurable impact on quality, cost and resource utilization.
  • Assures efficient and cost-effective utilization of Hospital resources at the unit level for day-to-day operations, clinical programming and unit-based education.
  • Clinical Excellence
  • Implements systems that incorporate evidenced-based practice and professional practice standards.
  • Assures regulatory compliance i.e., environmental, financial, practice, safety, technological, compliance.
  • Partners with Clinical leaders to execute the action plans for measurable continuous improvement in care outcomes.
  • Executes unit plans to improve patient/family experience by identifying trends and establishing systems to improve.
  • Partners with other clinical leaders and frontline staff to coordinate all facets of patient care planning with multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensures staff compliance to systems that promote quality, efficient and cost-effective care.
  • Resources all elements of patient care.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and develops an action plan to improve patient outcomes.
  • Assesses patients accurately, comprehends findings and communicates patient condition to all team members.

  • Coaches and supports unit-based leaders in effective management and leadership strategies.
  • Manages staff performance through coaching, counseling, goal setting, anecdotal and assisting in annual appraisals.
  • Coordinates with other CHOP care team colleagues to support continuous and measurable improvement in systems and process, further engaging staff in their environment.
  • Assists the Manager in establishing innovative staff recognition programs that acknowledge staff accomplishment at the unit/program level.
  • Assesses individual and team needs and deploys strategies that foster the succession plan for the team.
  • Creates a unit work climate which achieves high level employment engagement as measured through department specific metrics.
  • Leads collaborative efforts for patient population-based outcomes through clinical practice, education, research/evidence-based practice, and consultation.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years experience in the field of pulmonary function testing. Required and
  • At least two (2) years experience in the care of neonatal/pediatric patients. Required and
  • At least two (2) years supervisory/leadership experience Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with operation and troubleshooting of pulmonary function equipment. (Required proficiency)
  • Excellent communication skills, excellent leadership ability, excellent judgement, self-motivated and independent thinker. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates high standards of professionalism. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Respiratory Therapist (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required and
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board for Respiratory Care - upon hire - Required and
  • Registered Pulmonary Function Tech (RPFT) - National Board for Respiratory Care - upon hire - Required and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through an organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required
  • Respiratory Therapist License (New Jersey) - New Jersey State Licensing Board - upon hire - Preferred
