The Sterile Processing Lead will oversee daily sterile processing operations at Springfield Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center, ensuring compliance with regulating bodies while maintaining seamless instrument flow for surgical departments.

Job Relationships

Reports to the Operations Manager, ASC Infection Control and Quality Management

Principal Responsibilities



  • Serve as lead trainer for new and current Central Sterilizing Technicians
  • Assist Operations Manager with staff oversight, including creating department schedule and ensuring appropriate shift coverage
  • Participate as needed in interviewing and assist in selecting qualified Central Sterilizing Technician candidates.
  • Serve as a Super User and lead for business operations and SC initiatives.
  • Assist Operations Manager with metrics and reporting needs.
  • Manage instrumentation needs - ensure PAR levels are correct, orders are accurate, and inventory is up to date. Coordinate with Systems Specialist regarding repairs and document accordingly.
  • Act as a liaison between Sterile Processing and Operating Room staff, address instrument-related issues and communicate changes as needed.
  • Perform Central Sterilizing Technician duties.
  • Serve as a role model for the Central Sterilizing Technicians, demonstrating leadership, professionalism, and interpersonal skills that foster an open, safe environment for learning and communication.
  • Reviewing the OR schedule daily to recommend modifications that promote precise communication and coordinated actions across the departments. Verify that all required instruments have been sterilized and are available for the next day's cases.
  • Determine priority of instrument processing in order to expedite surgical case turnovers and maintain close communication with staff regarding instrument requirements and availability.
  • Verify the accuracy of sterilization documentation in the electronic record system, checking vendor trays for upcoming cases, and monitoring and reporting errors.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.


Education/Experience



  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Previous central sterilization processing experience or Surgical Technician experience.



Licenses/Certificates



  • Central Sterilizing Technician certification required
  • CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire.

Working Environment



  • Conditions include exposure to blood and body fluids, tissue and contagious diseases and/or potentially hazardous materials.
  • Occasional heavy lifting required.
  • Has hands in water.
