Job Title: Geophysicist (NWS 00800)
THE POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Strategic Deterrence Directorate has an opening within the Nuclear Test Data Program for a Geophysicist to provide historical test data to design physics for the stockpile stewardship mission. The successful candidate will work towards improving process workflows and meet with other staff to discuss the technical aspects of quality assurance of digitized documents. With minimal supervision, the successful candidate will report to the Nuclear Test Data Program Group Leader. The successful candidate will work with early career staff scientists and program managers to implement the process workflows. The successful candidate will dive deep into the technical data and interpret the information providing detailed reports.
Essential Duties
- Conduct quality assurance checks and analysis of digitized well logs and containment documents to enhance searchability of nuclear test history and Nevada Nuclear Security Site Information.
- Technical assistance with providing context to archiving of historical documentation within containment science.
- Mentor staff in the area of digitization and quality assurance of our containment science data and documentation via knowledge transfer.
- Assist staff to become proficient at the processes within the ADAM project workflow for the future.
- Modernize process controls used to generate and validate the digitized nuclear test data documentation.
- Interact with data archiving Personelle to provide valuable information and context.
- Provide biweekly updates on process flows and quality assurance associated activities.
- Improve current processes and procedures for the ADAM project workflow.
- Utilize Microsoft Suite programs to process data files from a variety of text-based outputs from historical data packages.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in nuclear test data and/or containment science processes and procedures.
- B.A or B.S in Chemistry or other equivalent studies, such as Radiochemistry, Geochemistry, Physics, or Biology.
- Expert level knowledge in geology and containment techniques.
- Expert level knowledge in the analysis and interpretation of radiochemical documentation from nuclear test history.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to be engaged in a team environment.
- Experience with leading projects and motivating small groups of people to achieve technical objectives.
- Experience with supporting and mentoring staff on complex projects.
- Strong understanding of the U.S weapon testing history.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Skilled in developing process workflows and procedures with knowledge of performing quality assurance.
- Prior experience in leading small groups to obtain mission goals and deliverables.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q
(position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
