Responsibilities

Horizon Health, the national leader in the management of inpatient behavioral health programs, together with CarolinaEast Medical Center's Crossroads Behavioral Health Program in New Bern, NC, seeks a PRN Recreation Therapist for our inpatient, Behavioral Health Program.

The Recreational Therapist is responsible for providing high quality patient care, displaying good skills in assessment, treatment planning, group and individual treatment. Additionally, they are responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team. The recreational therapist is expected to adhere to all ethical standards, codes of conduct, and licensing requirements as well as uphold client confidentiality and privacy rights.

This position may have contact with patients who have moderate to severe psychiatric concerns and/or behavioral issues. There is the possibility this position could be exposed to violent behavior from patients and/or behavioral issues as part of their daily duties.

This is a Per Diem (PRN) position, and hours/days of work are subject to the needs of the program, which operates seven days a week.

The PRN Recreation Therapist will

  • Assess, plan and implement recreational therapy approaches while aiding in the assessment of outcomes for patients deealing with psychiatric or sugbatance abuse issues.
  • Provide therapeutic and educational activities using both individual and group methods.
  • Work with patient sand families within a interdisciplinary team model.
  • Maintatin responsibility for dcumentationm in accordance with JCAHO and hospital standards.

Essential Core Functions:

  • Completes assessments, progress notes, and group notes timely, and according to state and accrediting entities, as well as hospital regulations.
  • Conducts educational and activity group sessions, displaying good theoretical knowledge of subject matter and effective communication skills in presenting materials.
  • Actively involved in measuring patient performance, communicating results and trends.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans based on a thorough assessment of symptoms, presentation, professional input, and other available documentation.
  • Conducts and adjusts therapies in accordance with patient diagnosis/needs and within defined standards of care.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings to patients, families, co-workers, and program leadership.
  • Participates as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Conducts oneself ethically in accordance with all relevant standards and regulations at all times.
  • Demonstrates respect for patients and patient rights at all times.
  • Completes and maintains all required state/regulatory, CarolinaEast/Horizon Health competencies and training/education expectations on a timely basis.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings and workshops. Keeps up to date on professional literature.

Qualifications

Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation therapy, therapeutic recreation or a concentration in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college/university required.
  • Licensed/certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation required (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCRTC).
  • A Licensed Recreational Therapist (LRT) by the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure (NCBRTL) or eligible to become an LRT.
  • Experience working in behavioral health and/or substance use is preferred.
  • Minimum one year of experience required as a Recreation Therapist.
  • Proven capability to engage collaboratively and efficiently swithin a multidisciplinary treatment team framework.
  • Ability to complete clinically significant documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Windows-based software applications.
