Salary Range Starting at: $18/per hour

Job Description:

The Corps Coordinator will leverage the full potential of the Army in Gary to positively impact individuals for Christ in practical ways- especially those living in poverty. As the Corps Coordinator you will be responsible for the business administration and operation/property management of the corps. You will also provide supervision over volunteers and program participants.

What You Will Do:

Social Services



  • Lead Social Services programming and give direction to workers/volunteers for food distribution activities.
  • Understand the Pathway of Hope approach and the ways that grants, contracts work to support the social ministries activities.


Community Engagement



  • Be actively engaged in the community to have knowledge of on-going needs, program development and improvements to current assistance. Speak on behalf of The Salvation Army in your service area.
  • Coordinate with Divisional HQ for volunteers, services, training, meetings, etc.
  • Participate in all Emergency and Disaster Services activities as needed.
  • Work with the officers to prepare for and participate in Advisory Council meetings.



Administration



  • Provide supervision to volunteer and program participants on site.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date program statistics and Gift in Kind donations for monthly reporting.
  • Ensure all invoices are given to County Admin Assistant for DHQ bookkeepers to process and pay on time.
  • Ensure all funds are processed in a timely manner in accordance with Salvation Army policy. Processing local cash/gym rentals and forwarding checks to County Admin Assistant for scanning in a timely manner.
  • Assist the officers in preparing the annual Gary Center budget.
  • Monitor business related expenditures to ensure expenses are accurate and do not exceed budget guidelines.
  • Ensure all property and equipment is properly maintained and kept clean at acceptable safety standards.
  • Review and submit all contracts to Area Command for approval and processing to DHQ.
  • Maintain accurate, current inventories of all Center equipment and supplies.
  • Share property and equipment proposals and/or bids for Area Commander to provide to DHQ.
  • Work with DHQ IT Dept as needed on all applicable equipment and software.
  • Submit and track insurance claims to Chesterfield Resources for property and vehicle claims.
  • Ensure Incident Reports of Injury forms are completed for all injuries and submitted to Chesterfield and DHQ HR, informing Area Commander as well.
  • Assist and oversee the planning, organizing, communication and implementation of programs, special events and Center activities as needed.
  • Work with communications director to manage social network presence (Facebook, website).



Fundraising/Christmas



  • Manage the Christmas Kettle Campaign effort.
  • Collect bellringer applications and send to DHQ for processing.
  • Manage bellringer schedules and distribute checks weekly.
  • Work with and help driver to deliver the kettle stands and bellringers, picking them up and dropping them off.
  • Distribute and collect kettles each day during kettle season
  • Lead the counting efforts each day, making sure to secure and deposit funds daily.
  • Enter kettle income and bellringer information into Register to Ring software each day.
  • Assist Angel Tree director/gym manager during toy collection and distribution as needed



Miscellaneous



  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and working well with volunteers, supervisors, clients, vendors, and community members. This would include but is not limited to such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of volunteers, visitors and clients; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about volunteers and supervisors.
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army's "Safe from Harm" Certification.
  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership


Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: BA/BS in Pastoral Ministry or Business or have relevant working experience in business administration and volunteer supervision.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Combination of training and experience will be considered. Proven experience with social service, community relations, and a minimum of one year experience working with finances, and/or accounting. Proficiency in computer software applications, including demonstrated experience in using email, MS Office applications, Internet, and Social Media platforms.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities:



  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.


  • Must be a team player, a self-starter, and able to handle several projects at the same time
  • Perform well with minimum supervision.
  • Must demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment.

Travel: Position will require occasional travel for training and/or pick-up and delivery of essential business items, driving around kettles and workers at Christmas, picking up toys or other donations in the service area of Gary, Merrillville, Crown Point (Lake Co.)

Working Conditions:



  • Mostly in office setting (indoors), but occasionally outside for kettles, yard work, events, driving.
  • Light to moderate physical work.
  • Remain stationary for some periods of time
  • Use hands and fingers, move, occasionally position self to stoop, kneel or crouch
  • Reach with and use arms and hands as required in using standard office equipment and a PC.
  • Ability for close vision, distance vision and ability to focus.
  • Be able to frequently lift up to twenty pounds and occasionally up to forty pounds.
