The Career Coach, part of the Undergraduate Career Development team within the Carlson Business Career Center, provides comprehensive career coaching and development support to Carlson's 3,300+ undergraduate students. Utilizing a deep knowledge of design thinking and career development theory, this individual will empower students to confidently bring their whole selves to the career search as they explore various fields of interest. This role also requires expertise in a specialized business industry to effectively prepare students for competitive job searches within those sectors. As the Career Coach, this person will offer personalized, one-on-one support throughout all phases of the career and job search process. Additionally, as an educator, they will co-create and teach sections of the Carlson-required career course (BA 2021) each year.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Career Coaching 45%

  • Provide personalized, effective, and targeted one-on-one career coaching to undergraduate students and alumni up to 12 months post graduation served by the CBCC. Utilize design thinking principles, coaching best practices, assessment tools, and current business industry insights.
  • Build authentic and supportive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and identities. Leverage these connections to holistically guide students through systemic barriers and support their career growth and success.
  • Develop deep expertise in your assigned niche industry, including knowledge of interview practices and recruiting timelines. Train and coach students on how to effectively utilize the Carlson network to enhance their job search.
  • Oversee the creation and regular updates of career resources for students exploring and pursuing various career paths. This includes generating content such as career guides, key industry insights, handouts, and videos, across both internal and external digital platforms.
  • Provide specialized career coaching for a designated career specialization. Identify the needs of the student population and design advising strategies to address those needs.
  • Share insights, best practices, challenges, and ideas related to the student audiences you serve with the CBCC Undergraduate Career Development Director and other team members. This includes contributing to the preparation of coaching guides and other materials for use by the coaching team.
  • Record detailed notes from student meetings to ensure open collaboration between coaches. All notes should be entered into the recruiting system within 48 hours of meeting with a student.
  • With direction from the Director of Undergraduate Career Development, monitor a list of still seeking students and develop tailored career strategies to help these students find employment.

Program Management and Industry Insight (20%)

  • Collaborate with the business development team by participating in firm visits and student treks, both locally and nationally, to engage with firm representatives, gather industry insights, and relay feedback to support students in their job searches.
  • Continuously expand knowledge of assigned business functions and industry trends by connecting with enterprise directors, alumni, and conducting independent research.
  • Partner with the business development team to identify and cultivate relationships with companies that align with student interests and career goals.
  • Engage with campus interviewers and attend company information sessions to build productive relationships and stay informed on current market trends.
  • Assists with CBCC special events such as open houses, employer tabling and recruiting events, and career fairs.

Leadership, Management and Special Projects (20%)

  • Manage, promote, and evaluate Career Week, ensuring all Carlson students are aware of opportunities to prepare for and engage with the CBCC before the Career Fair.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Associate Director of Career Curriculum and Programming to deliver relevant and innovative programming, the student engagement team to promote awareness, and the employer development team on sponsorship opportunities.
  • Continue to consistently enhance Career Week's impact, broadening its focus to address students' evolving job search needs while fostering excitement, support, and connection to career resources.
  • Serve as a liaison to Carlson School organizations relevant to assigned student audiences, including program offices, admissions, enterprises, and others.
  • Engage with professional development organizations by attending events to connect with peers, stay informed on career services innovations, and share Carlson's successes and best practices. Actively share learnings with the coaching team.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional project teams with colleagues from Student Engagement, Advising and other departments.
  • Represent the CBCC on cross-functional task forces, committees, or special projects, such as search committees or joint initiatives between the Undergraduate Program and Career Center.
  • Complete additional special projects for the Carlson School or the University of Minnesota as assigned.

Course Curriculum leadership and academic instruction (15%)

  • Teach one section of BA2021 each semester (two sections per year) and oversee the Teaching Assistant and grading for each section.
  • Lead the development and analysis of course learning outcomes for the Undergraduate Career Coaching team, ensuring alignment with current career coaching trends and student needs.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Curriculum and Programming to maintain innovative and relevant course content, incorporating active learning techniques, classroom assessment strategies, inclusive teaching practices, and promoting awareness of CBCC career resources.

MINIMUM / ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in career counseling, student personnel psychology, student affairs, business, or closely related field. Evidence of at least 2 years of relevant experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Experience working with undergraduate students
  • Experience working in a metric driven environment
  • Experience building and development relationships across industries and sectors
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience developing and executing educational programs, including creating learning outcomes, creation of content, delivery, and assessment of learning outcomes and student needs.
  • Directly related experience facilitating workshops, presentations, and/or academic courses with an ability to communicate successfully across all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Evidence of project management skills (i.e. the ability to manage a project and deliver outcomes from start to finish, amidst competing priorities).
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $60,000 to $67,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
