Job description: The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and oversee the design, implementation, evaluation, and analysis of research studies involving cellular immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and mouse genetics to elucidate mechanisms that regulate immune responses to cell death, pathogens and tumors. These duties are accomplished through the oversight of (1) planning and executing complex laboratory research studies; (2) supervising laboratory research and support staff; (3) analyzing, interpreting, and reporting scientific data in local and national scientific meetings and peer-reviewed publication; (4) submission and maintenance of animal, human and safety protocols ; (5) research grant development and submission. Responsibilities:
This involves and requires the primary daily responsibility for directly managing support staff in the laboratory. Essential duties include overseeing the daily and weekly cycle of mouse husbandry and genotyping procedures that are performed by a dedicated Junior Scientist position in the laboratory. Undergraduate student employees are also supervised directly or through the Junior Scientist, to perform these animal duty tasks and are thus either directly or indirectly supervised by the Senior Research Associate. Requires daily awareness of physical needs within the animal colony including decisions made in consultation with local veterinary staff regarding animal health, treatment, and breeding concerns. Requirement and ability to train all employees in all required procedures and techniques. Ability to intercede for all levels of animal care including daily/weekly genotyping and husbandry needs in the event of illness, vacation, and/or or lapse of employment of Junior Scientist and/or student employee staff. Review and approve results of recurrent weekly tests performed on animals. Ensure results are appropriately reported in the most timely manner possible. Assign additional research support tasks as needed. Provide additional training and guidance when work is below required standards. Interview and make hiring recommendations for replacement employees. Additional mission-critical role in supervising and directly and indirectly mentoring undergraduate and graduate/medical students and postdoctoral fellows. These trainees perform laboratory rotations and complete research projects for advanced degrees, honors, or other training. Provide exposure, training, experience, and supervision (in both theory and in practice) for traditional, foundational, and state-of-the-art laboratory techniques that are essential for scientists-in-training. Aid and directly facilitate students and fellows in mastery of interpretation of scientific literature, design of experiments, execution of experiments, collection of data, interpretation and analysis of data. Provide training in preparation of trainee student and fellow data for public presentation and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
