Title: WIC Client Ambassador - Community Innovation & Outreach (CIAO) Grant (Berrien County)

Part-Time / 20 hrs per week / Funded Thru: 12-31-26

$22.55 - $29.34 / Posted Thru: 6/23/2025

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Travel Required Within Berrien County, Michigan

Purpose: Michigan WIC is seeking current and former WIC clients to serve as client ambassadors from mid-2025 through late 2026. Those hired for this position will work approximately 20 hours/week and will be paid hourly to do WIC outreach in their communities. This will include sharing WIC Program information with community partners and people who may be eligible to receive WIC benefits. Client ambassadors will also work with current WIC clients to provide support and encouragement. Ambassadors must be familiar with their communities and comfortable in many different community spaces (e.g., health fairs, family events, doctor offices, faith-based settings). This is a hybrid position, with some work being done in-person throughout the community and some work being done remotely.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build trusting relationships with clients and potential clients based on shared experience and peer support.
  • Work directly with current Michigan WIC clients to keep them enrolled and engaged with the Program.
  • Mentor new clients on how to navigate the WIC Program.
  • Promote the Michigan WIC Program to people who may qualify.
  • Help potentially eligible people start the WIC enrollment process.
  • Share information on WIC benefits and eligibility with community partners and health care providers.
  • Meet regularly with the project manager and WIC local agency to give updates, work through problems and plan outreach activities.
  • Provide survey to WIC clients before and after working with them to measure impact.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Lived WIC experience.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Comfort with meeting new people and speaking with small groups.
  • Ability to manage time well and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, over the phone and through email.
  • Experience with programs like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to multitask and problem-solve.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive WIC applicant/client information.



Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: None required. Experience working directly with members of the community is preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Confidence and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to retain and recall basic WIC Program information (training will be provided).
  • Compassion and motivation to help WIC reach more families.
  • Ability to communicate in languages other than English is helpful, but not required.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements:Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and will involve viewing a computer monitor much of the time. Requires avalid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibilities.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.

Project success will positively impact the health outcomes of eligible pregnant and postpartum people, infants and children under five by extending the reach of the Michigan WIC Program and ensuring that current clients stay on the Program for as long as possible.
