Job Summary

The Alliance Health Project (AHP) is a community-based LGBTQ+ and HIV-focused clinic located at 1930 Market Street in San Francisco. We provide individual and group psychotherapy, substance use counseling, case management, support groups, psychiatry, sexual health services, a graduate-level clinical traineeship program, and provider education and training. Our multi-disciplinary staff are a client-centered, collaborative, harm reduction-oriented team. We have continued to grow as a community-based clinic by anticipating and addressing the changing needs of our LGBTQ+ and HIV community members for more than 35 years. Our process of continuous improvement of service to our community includes a strong focus on cultural humility and anti-racist service provision.

The Clinical Social Worker (CSW) I/II position is part of the Behavioral Health Services team and is responsible for providing individual and group psychotherapy, care coordination, targeted case management and substance use counseling services to individuals who have severe mental health challenges, substance use issues and/or are living with HIV/AIDS. This position requires strong communication skills, understanding the clinical needs of diverse communities, and the ability to perform multiple clinical tasks. This position involves a combination of triage/screening and referral, crisis assessment, intake assessment and carrying a caseload of psychotherapy clients. Additionally, this position will participate in becoming certified in providing one of two specific trauma treatments - STAIR Narrative Therapy (SNT) or Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) - and providing treatment to a caseload of clients with PTSD symptoms who are part of a clinical trial at AHP.

This position is part of a larger multidisciplinary behavioral health services team that includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, therapists, substance use counselors, case managers and psychologists. This position provides a continuum of behavioral health services and is intended to be a core component to increasing service access to individuals with co-occurring disorders. All services are provided within a harm reduction philosophy, and utilize relational therapy, trauma-informed treatments among other interventions. This position works under the clinical supervision of a licensed mental health professional and in conjunction with other teammates.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $37.56 - $50.31 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Alliance Health Project (AHP) provides a wide range of mental health services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, as well as members of the LGBTQ community living with serious mental health challenges. AHP also provides publications and trainings for health care professionals and volunteers. Required Qualifications

CSW I:

  • A master's degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related clinical counseling field
or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance
CSW II:
  • In addition to the above, possession of the requirements necessary for application for licensure as a clinical social worker as determined by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners

Preferred Qualifications


  • One year of direct clinical experience in the treatment of multiply diagnosed clients (mental health conditions, substance abuse, medical issues, etc.).
  • One year of experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • One year of experience coordinating care with service providers.
  • One year of experience in facilitating groups with multiply diagnosed clients.
  • Familiar with Avatar and Mental Health and Drug Medi-Cal systems of care
  • Experience with documenting according to Medi-Cal standards in Epic, both Mental Health and Drug Medi-Cal systems
  • Understanding of psychosocial issues facing the LGBTQ+ and HIV-affected communities.
  • Experience working within a harm reduction framework, utilizing trauma-informed care models and evidence-based relational therapies.
  • Fluent in Spanish, with written and verbal proficiency and past professional experience utilizing Spanish in clinical work.
  • Sensitivity to working with cultural, ethnic, and racial issues.
  • Demonstrated cultural humility.
  • Understanding and experience working with severe mental health challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance.

License/Certification

CSW I/II

  • Within 6 months of employment, successful completion of San Francisco Department of Public Health Involuntary Hold/5150 certification.
