Overview:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer within the New Product Development (NPD) team, you will lead the design, development, prototyping, and deployment of innovative, packaging machinery. This role is critical in transitioning early-stage concepts into scalable, manufacturable solutions, working closely with cross-functional teams from enterprise, manufacturing, procurement, and electrical engineering. The role offers hands-on involvement in prototyping at our Aurora, IL location and close collaboration with engineering teams across sites.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Design and develop advanced packaging machinery using SolidWorks and ePDM, ensuring safety, performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Generate detailed drawings, assemblies, and BOMs, and manage data within ERP systems.
  • Lead prototyping and field testing to validate mechanical functionality and compliance with regulatory and customer standards.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers on system integration, component selection (motors, sensors), and sequencing.
  • Present and release design documentation, analysis, and layouts for internal and external stakeholder review.
  • Support beta site deployment and resolve design-related issues impacting quality or performance in commercial use.
  • Drive continuous improvement by analyzing field feedback, competitive equipment, and emerging technologies.
  • Engage directly with customers and internal teams to uncover challenges and identify opportunities for innovation.



Job Functions



  • Apply mechanical design skills, using 3D CAD modeling, to develop innovative packaging machinery meeting requirements for safety, performance, durability, and cost.


  • Create assemblies, detailed drawings, and BOMs using Solidworks, ePDM, and ERP systems.
  • Perform product and machinery prototyping and testing to ensure form, fit, and function and compliance with customer and government standards.
  • Assist electrical engineering by detailing sequence of operation and selecting appropriate devices such as sensors and motors.


  • Coordinate the review, presentation and release of design layouts, drawings, analysis, and other documentation.
  • Resolve commercial design issues causing quality or customer efficiency problems by implementing equipment changes as appropriate.
  • Follow up new designs in the field at customer locations for successful commercial launch.


  • Interact with external and internal customers to understand pain points and identify potential innovations.


  • Analyze competitive machinery and research new technologies to inform machinery design.



Requirements



  • Bachelor's Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years' experience in machine design; packaging machinery preferred.
  • Electro-mechanical and pneumatic machine design preferred.
  • Hands-on prototyping in R&D lab/manufacturing environment is required.



Skills & Training



  • Experience with part design, drawing creation, tolerance analysis, etc.
  • Ability to work hands on with projects in a research and development environment.
  • Problem solving mentality with ability to think creatively to troubleshoot machine issues, design constraints, and other roadblocks.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks
  • Experience with firmware, software & electro-mechanical components is a plus.
  • Experience with paper systems, paper development, paper creation, or paper packaging is a plus.
  • Must be detail orientated, have strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize.
  • A self-starter with excellent communication skills.
  • Prior experience with tools, fixtures and data acquisition devices is a plus.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to partner with internal customers.


Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of Pregis' total compensation package. The base pay range for this role is estimated to be $120-$150K for this salaried exempt role.
