About the role

Reporting to the NPD AM&B Manager, the Controls Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of control systems for packaging machinery. Key responsibilities include developing and documenting PLC, HMI, and motion control solutions in new equipment designs as well as upgrading and modifying existing systems. The Controls Engineer provides ongoing technical support and troubleshooting to systems, service and manufacturing teams.

The NPD team is composed of engineering professionals located in Aurora and Sussex with most prototyping activities based in Aurora, IL. This role offers a strong opportunity for cross-functional collaboration with peer engineers, engineering supervisors, enterprise engineering, machine assembly teams, and procurement.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Develop and implement PLC, HMI, and motion control programs for new machinery.
  • Modify and upgrade existing control systems to improve performance and functionality.
  • Document system architecture, changes, and programming standards.
  • Provide troubleshooting and support for controls-related issues on the production floor.
  • Collaborate with engineering peers, machine builders, enterprise engineering, and procurement.
  • Participate in system testing, validation, and prototyping activities primarily based in Aurora, IL.



Skills Required:



  • Solid understanding of PLCs, including Allen Bradley (RSLogix 500/5000) and Beckhoff/Codesys.
  • Solid knowledge of HMI and SCADA design, C#/WPF experience a plus.
  • Good understanding of electrical CAD design, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Good understanding of servo motion control.
  • Knowledge or experience with IEC 61131-3, Ladder Logic, Version Control including Git or SVN.
  • Knowledge or experience with Object Oriented Programming principles.
  • Requires superior interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with employees, staff, management, etc.
  • Must possess superior organizational skills and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on several projects.
  • Ability to operate within a team atmosphere, shift priorities and effectively perform under pressure.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. 50% - Design, modify, test and troubleshoot new and existing systems including HMI and PLC software and electrical layout and documentation.
  2. 25% - Document and develop new applications from the beginning of the development lifecycle through implementation.
  3. 20% - Assist internal and external customers with operational support.
  4. 5% - Create documentation of existing systems.
  5. Performs other job-related duties as assigned subject to reasonable accommodations



EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE



  • Bachelors' degree (EE or Programming)
  • 6-10 years related experience
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience in HMI, PLC, and Motion Control programming. Candidates with experience in CAD and Structured Text are preferred.



Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of Pregis' total compensation package. The base pay range for this role is estimated to be $120-$150K for this salaried exempt role.
