Position Overview


Essential Job Duties
We are looking to hire one researcher with a background in bioinformatics of genomic data, and/or statistical genetics. Strong skills in scripting and command line coding are necessary, are excellent written and verbal communication. Researchers with experience in polyploid or other non-model organisms are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful researcher will collaborate with USDA- ARS breeding programs to develop genomic resources and genotyping platforms for use in genomics-based breeding strategies.

  1. Assist in the identification of simplex markers to track interspecific recombination.
  2. Contribute to the analysis and optimization of genotyping platforms tailored for rapid cycling of early-generation breeding and pre-breeding material.
  3. Support the development of computational tools and pipelines for managing polyploid genomic data and integrating it into breeding workflows.

Requirements and Preferences


Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
Department Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Bioinformatics, Quantitative Genetics, Molecular Breeding, Plant or Animal Genetics, Molecular Biology, or related field awarded in the last five years
  • Background in bioinformatics of genomic and molecular data, and/or statistical genetics.
  • Must have experience in genome assembly, linkage mapping, genomic variant calling and validation, and ad-hoc bioinformatics.
  • Must be proficient with R and/or Python and Linux/Unix systems.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Strong skills in computer scripting and pipeline development.
  • Experience working in high-performance computing environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are beneficial.
