Position Summary |
This position is for an academic advisor who will serve in the Exploratory Center working with students who are Undecided/Exploring majors, primarily. As needed, they may also assist the office with a roster of Intended Business or Grady majors, particularly during New Student Orientation. This advisor will be responsible for advising and maintaining regular contact with a roster of students during the major exploration process, guiding them through use of appropriate resources and programs, responding to student communications, and referring to other campus units. This position will also perform a combination of the following duties, based on the business needs of the office: office administrative tasks; office representation and liaison work with campus partners; advisor training and professional development leadership; and supplemental administrative tasks for Orientation. Because this individual will interact directly with Exploratory Center employees, advisees, and campus partners, demonstrate an appreciation for and a commitment to accommodating a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences in the course of their daily work, and demonstrate a commitment to cultural competence and ongoing professional development in this area. |

Academic Advising
The primary responsibility of an Academic Advisor in the Explore Group within the Exploratory Center is to meet with students assigned to them, or referred to them for consultations, in person or virtually. Explore Advisors provide each student with accurate information about various degree programs, make recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generate detailed advising forms, and maintain thorough advising notes. An Explore advisor will maintain consistent contact with assigned students, maintain accurate student records and respond in a timely manner to questions from their advisees. They will work directly with students to develop an academic plan and goals for major exploration, providing campus referrals as needed.
Explore advisors must demonstrate a perspective that genuinely appreciates, understands, supports and effectively accommodates various student backgrounds and experiences. Orientation advising is expected throughout the year. |

Administrative Work
Duties related to advising administration will include: answering student and staff emails; creating and maintaining accurate records of student appointments, referrals, academic progress, and goals. Office level administrative duties will include, but are not limited to: campus partner liaison work; advisor training and training material creation; Orientation administrative support; management of resources and relevant information about academic programs; office representation as needed. Additional administrative duties may be assigned, based on the business needs of the office. |

Professional Development
Attend classes or training related to academic advising. This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising, and other campus training to maintain and enhance cultural competence. Professional development will be essential to this cross-trained specialization. Regularly attend staff meetings for updates, any scheduled committee meetings, and others as needed. |
