DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Working as a Social Worker 2 for the Department of Corrections (DOC) involves maintaining effective communication with various DOC and community personnel to coordinate specific services tailored to inmate needs. A key aspect of this role is direct interaction with inmates, which provides a rewarding opportunity to witness their engagement in the process of change. The Social Worker is tasked with determining the appropriate services, programs, and treatments required for each inmate on their caseload. Additionally, you will conduct individual or group counseling sessions focused on reentry and discharge planning. The role also includes preparing formal reports that detail an inmate's progress and adjustment within the institution, along with staff recommendations for the courts and parole authorities. Furthermore, you will manage complex cases, often involving inmates who are also receiving mental health services, necessitating independent decision-making to effectively advise and plan for their rehabilitation while navigating the interconnected systems that influence their success. - Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Additional pay will be considered for those who currently possess or obtain licensure as a Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, or Professional Counselor issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapist and Professional Counselors. Documentation will need to be provided at interview to receive additional pay consideration.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or Forensic Social Worker 1 (commonwealth job titles) (must have been employed in a commonwealth social worker job title on September 8, 2008, with continuous commonwealth employment); or
- Two years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or a Forensic Social Worker 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration and a bachelor's degree in social work or social welfare; or
- Two years of professional experience providing direct public or private social work services, and a bachelor's degree in social work or social welfare; or
- A master's degree in social work or social welfare.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Special Requirement:
- All employees in the Department of Corrections must obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification within two months of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment in the job.
Other Requirements:
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA required.
