Position Summary

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago seeks outstanding candidates for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor (rank/tenure commensurate with experience) in Tissue Typing/HLA Laboratory Testing.

UI Health is an enterprise that includes a 470 bed tertiary care hospital, 30+ outpatient clinics and patient-centered research entities including the University of Illinois Cancer Center. The University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago is one of three campuses that make up the nation's largest public medical school. The Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine provides testing in all major disciplines including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, transfusion medicine, tissue typing/transplant and molecular pathology including next-generation sequencing along with an active surgical pathology and cytopathology service.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Service Responsibilities - Department of Pathology
  • Oversee the operations of the Histocompatibility (HLA) Laboratory, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards (ASHI, CAP, UNOS).
  • Serve as the attending pathologist for HLA testing, including pre-transplant compatibility testing, antibody screening, and crossmatching.
  • Review and interpret HLA typing, donor-recipient matching, and immunogenetics reports for solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Pathology leadership to ensure appropriate staffing and resources for the HLA lab.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Department of Pathology leadership, ensuring they align with the lab's operational needs.
  • Educational Responsibilities
  • Contribute to medical student pathology courses and other graduate-level programs as needed.
  • Train and mentor residents, fellows, and rotating trainees in HLA lab operations, immunogenetics, and transplant pathology.
  • Provide educational support for clinicians, surgeons, and transplant teams utilizing HLA lab services.
  • Participate in interdepartmental teaching for trainees from other UIC colleges rotating through Pathology.
  • Research & Scholarly Activities (if applicable)
  • Engage in transplant immunology, HLA-related research, or hematopathology investigations.
  • Collaborate with transplant teams, immunologists, and molecular pathologists on research projects.
  • Guide trainees (residents, fellows, medical students) in scholarly projects related to HLA or hematopathology.
  • Other Professional Responsibilities
  • Ensure the HLA lab meets accreditation standards (ASHI/CAP/UNOS) and participates in proficiency testing.
  • Maintain expertise through CME, conferences, and professional societies (e.g., ASHI, AST).
  • Serve on institutional committees related to transplantation or laboratory medicine.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Clinical Pathology leadership to support departmental goals.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • PhD, MD, DO, DO/PhD or MD/PhD degree from an accredited institution
    • MD/DO candidates must be Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) or clinical pathology (CP)
    • MD/DO and PhD candidates must hold certification as a Laboratory Director, Clinical Consultant, and Technical Supervisor for Hematopoietic Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplantation (Related and Unrelated Donors), and Solid Organ Transplantation (Live Donors) by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI)
    • The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years experience in Tissue Typing/HLA Laboratory Testing.
