Position Summary

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a full-time academic surgical pathologist to join our faculty serving as an expert consultant. Additional experience or interest in breast or gynecologic pathology is desirable. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with candidate's experience, qualifications and funding.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Service Responsibilities
  • Provide expert diagnostic interpretation of surgical pathology specimens, with a focus on breast pathology (core biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, etc.).
  • Offer consultative services to clinicians and referring pathologists for complex or challenging cases.
  • Participate in the Anatomic Pathology on-call rotation, providing timely intraoperative consultations (frozen sections) and urgent case reviews.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Anatomic Pathology or Department Head to support departmental operations.
  • Education & Teaching Responsibilities
  • Ensure excellence in teaching and directly train medical students, residents, fellows, and post-doctoral trainees in breast pathology.
  • Provide educational experiences for rotating residents and fellows from other departments or institutions.
  • Assist colleagues in preparing and delivering intramural/extramural lectures, conferences, and professional presentations.
  • Develop and participate in continuing education programs, including in-service training for lab staff and pathology personnel.
  • Play an active role in the recruitment, retention, and evaluation of pathology residents and fellows.
  • Research & Clinical Investigation Responsibilities
  • Engage in basic, translational, or clinical research, including clinical trials, novel testing methodologies, and collaborative studies.
  • Support inter-departmental and institutional research initiatives within the College of Medicine and affiliated institutions.
  • Mentor trainees (students, residents, fellows) in research projects, publications, and academic pursuits.
  • Other Professional Responsibilities
  • Serve on departmental, hospital, and university committees as needed.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise in pathology through CME programs, scientific meetings, and self-directed learning (including AMA Category 1 credits).
  • Engage with national and local pathology societies to stay current with advancements in the field.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Anatomic Pathology or Department Head to meet institutional goals.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    Candidates for this position must have an MD, DO, DO/PhD, MD/PhD or other equivalent degree, qualify for a license to practice medicine in Illinois, and be board eligible or possess board certification in anatomic pathology. A minimum of two years of independent sign-out experience is preferred.
