Job Summary
This is a high-level administrative management position responsible for providing leadership and management of academic and staff personnel activities in the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) on diverse issues, many confidential in nature. Establish and lead long-term strategic vision for academic and staff personnel services within CPE, including process modernization and workforce planning aligned with divisional goals. In collaboration with senior leadership, proactively set strategic direction and prioritize initiatives that anticipate future needs and challenges within academic and staff personnel functions. Collaborate strategically with IT to design, develop, and implement advanced technology-driven HR solutions, The position includes an indirect reporting line to the Dean for all academic personnel matters, and direct reporting relationship to the Executive Assistant Dean, Chief Business Officer for staff human resource matters including HR initiatives, organizational development initiatives and staff training and development matters. Interacts closely with senior leadership team members, directors, unit managers and supervisors, providing advice and support on all matters related to academic and staff personnel. Serves as business partner with the campus HR for the entire division. Oversees the CPE Human Resources unit and provides strategic and technical leadership regarding academic and staff personnel issues to the CPE HR team. Leads policy development initiatives for the entire division of CPE, ensuring alignment with campus-wide HR evolution and future-focused technologies. - Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business, or other related area or equivalent experience/training.
- 10 or more years of progressive leadership and management experience to be an effective leader in the areas of human resources, business operations, and communications. Experience interpreting and implementing staff and academic human resources practices, policies, and procedures in a University setting.
- Experience interpreting and applying state and federal laws and regulations relating to employment, wage and hour (compensation), employee relations, employee benefits, employee health, affirmative action/equal opportunity, employee development and other human resources functions.
- Supervisory experience and team building skills demonstrated through past performance to recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, resolve problems/conflicts, conduct performance management, and build effective service-oriented, team environment.
- Experience employing change management in the implementation of new regulatory requirements, business processes and/or automated systems.
- Strategic planning, analytical, and program evaluation skills to provide sound recommendations, continually examine, develop, or revise systems to accommodate changing requirements. Project management skills to take complex, significant projects from conception to fruition in a timely and effective manner.
- Excellent leadership presentation skills with experience presenting complicated solutions to problems eloquently and to a broad audience of stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to convey information and ideas, influence outcomes, diplomatically handle difficult situations work effectively and sensitively with diverse people, situations, and ideas and retain appropriate confidentiality.
- Knowledge of and skills to implement principles of performance management, UC Davis' principles of community, coaching skills to enhance staff contributions to the organization's mission.
- Advanced computer proficiency including knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook/email programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business, or other related area.
- Advanced degree in Law, Human Resources, or business.
- Master's Degree in Human Resources or Business Administration, or equivalent experience/training.
- Experience with UC academic and staff policy and procedures.
- Experience with a high growth technology enabled environment.
- Experience with UC academic and staff personnel systems.
- Experience leading business-process improvement, organizational-change initiatives, and information-systems implementations.
- Senior-level management experience to analyze big picture and complex information or problems in an objective manner and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for making decisions and establishing priorities, selecting appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others, and to resolve conflicts.
- Familiarity with Academic Senate, Academic Federation, staff personnel, collective bargaining, and student employment regulations.
- Familiarity with OKR system implementation and tracking.

Department Overview UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is the academic division of the university dedicated to workforce and career development. CPE helps professional working adults upskill, reskill and advance their careers. CPE partners with campus schools, colleges and faculty to create global access to the distinctive knowledge and resources of UC Davis, and also works with employers and local experts to develop programs targeted to regional needs for economic development.
