Pathology Supervisor (LAB RSCH SUPV 1)

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN TURLOCK, CA. Under direction of the faculty supervisor, responsible for management and supervision of the Pathology and Shipping/Receiving Departments. Provides assistance in the Sample Receiving Section as necessary. Under minimal supervision, provides technical assistance in the necropsy section. Assists with research projects in collaboration with academic supervisors within the CAHFS system. Provide high level technical skills, computer data entry and laboratory maintenance for necropsy facilities.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Experience to perform mammalian and avian necropsies independently under the pathologists' general direction.
• Management and supervision skills to recruit, select, train, assign workload, evaluate performance, and perform conflict resolution for staff supervised. Extensive knowledge of diagnostic procedures and tests used in a veterinary clinical diagnostic laboratory.
• Anatomic knowledge of avian and mammalian species, as well as infectious diseases of poultry and livestock.
• Skills to recognize major mammalian and avian tissue and perform trimming for histopathology procedures.
• Knowledge and skills to handle/dispose of chemical and biohazardous wastes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians guidelines and standards for accreditation.
• Knowledge to provide interpretative aspects of test results to clientele.
• Knowledge and skills to follow ALAS and NIH regulations related to laboratory animal care and biosafety.
• Knowledge and skills to safely operate a pathological and biomedical incinerator in compliance with and according to State provisions.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety measures and procedures and follow safe working practices.
• Ability to instruct/monitor staff supervised regarding same.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines. Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e., Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.). Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.
