Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Instructional Laboratory Administrator for the Physics & Astronomy department within the School of Arts and Sciences. Each week, between 1,700 to 2,100 students participate in undergraduate physics laboratory courses. The Instructional Laboratory Administrator is responsible for all technical aspects of these labs, ensuring their effective operation and implementing continuous improvements.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Manages selected laboratory courses, overseeing daily lab management, training instructors of the sections and Learning Assistants in safety protocols, and resource allocation.
  • Works with a faculty member to update and prepare lab manuals, contribute to the development of instructional resources, and integrate modern teaching technologies to improve student learning.
  • Collaborates on research-driven innovations in physics education and writing proposals for external grant funding to support ongoing lab enhancements.
  • Manages the instructional lab budget and supervises a physics support specialist.
  • Works closely with the Undergraduate Program Director of the Physics and Astronomy Department, this position plays a critical role in advancing the department's instructional mission.
  • Works independently to manage the technical and instructional operations of undergraduate physics laboratory courses.
  • Exercises sound judgment within broadly defined objectives, with limited oversight of results.
  • Applies advanced knowledge of experimental physics, laboratory procedures, and instructional best practices to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of multiple lab sections.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • A PhD or equivalent in Physics, astronomy, science education, or a related field.


Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in physics laboratory instruction and management.
  • Advanced knowledge of experimental physics and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot physics lab equipment.
  • Experience with developing lab manuals and instructional materials.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills to manage multiple lab sections and support staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of university-level mathematics and physics, working knowledge of computers, electronics and mechanical systems, and in-depth knowledge of physics test instruments like oscilloscopes, signal generators, and radiation detectors.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to interact cooperatively with faculty and students.

  • The maturity to handle a multifaceted job with conflicting demands is essential.

Physical Requirements:

  • The role may require lifting and moving lab equipment.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking while setting up labs and assisting students.
  • Occasional manual dexterity tasks such as assembling or repairing laboratory apparatus.


Work Environment:
  • This is a fast-paced and demanding role, requiring the incumbent to split their time between Busch Campus (70%) and Douglass Campus (30%). The position involves working in physics laboratories, managing equipment, supervising instructors, and ensuring safety compliance.
Special Conditions

  • Travel between campuses is necessary to oversee lab operations, support instructional activities, and coordinate with faculty and staff.
