Job Summary |
The Special Collections Metadata Librarian serves as the primary cataloger for the Special Collections Department by providing cataloging for Aviation, Philatelic, Rare Books, University Archives, and other unique collections. Provides original and complex copy cataloging of serials, monographs, rare books, and digital collections, including some foreign language materials and multimedia items.
Provides input and guidance in the development and implementation of metadata creation policies, procedures, and local practices for print, electronic, and multimedia formats of library materials. |
Minimum Education and Experience |
Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an
ALA-accredited institution; experience in working with an integrated library system, preferably ExLibris' Alma; excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. |

- Familiarity with metadata standards such as MARC21, RDA, LCSH, LCC, etc.
- Experience working with OCLC and Alma systems
- One year of original cataloging experience in academic libraries, and
- Familiarity with handling and cataloging Special Collections materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Catalog resources using OCLC Connexion software to search and download appropriate records into Alma LSP (Library Services Platform), and perform subsequent modifications to records, using RDA, MARC 21, and LCSH according to national and local standards.
- Provide collection-level records for archival collections in aviation and other collections.
- Process resources in all formats within the Special Collections department, adhering to department requirements and archival processing methods.
- Create original cataloging records for rare and archival foreign language materials and upload records to the OCLC national bibliographic database.
- Attend and participate in Metadata Services meetings and training. Work with professionals in the Metadata Services unit to devise, standardize, and document cataloging and processing procedures for print, electronic, and multimedia formats to ensure adherence to local cataloging standards.
- Attend and participate in Special Collections departmental meetings and special events as needed.
- Document metadata and cataloging procedures for assigned areas of responsibility.
- Assist with other tasks or initiatives as assigned.
- Attend professional meetings of appropriate organizations to contribute to growth and competence.
