Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Pesticide License is required.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for assisting and supporting the applied research and extension programs in peach and citrus breeding and genetics. The position will oversee field trials, greenhouse, and laboratory applied research in cooperation with industry and CAES faculty. The Research Professional will have responsibility for research design and modification, data analysis, interpretation, project management, results summarization, and may include formal presentations at professional meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and conduct field and laboratory research
  • Willing to travel, including overnight, to address disease and horticultural issues as they occur
  • Thorough working knowledge of theoretical concepts that are important for successful hypothesis-driven research

  • Manage the complex operations of maintaining a greenhouse, plant materials, including watering, pruning, propagation testing and pest management; operate environmental controls
  • Maintain greenhouse facility, including installing cooling pads and shade screens.

  • Coordinate the hiring and supervising of full-time and part-time personnel
  • Collaborate with interns, graduate students in the execution of all research projects assigned by faculty.
  • Assist supervisor with training and leading activities, for students, part-time personnel in accomplishing design, establishing data collection and analysis of results from field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments.

  • Purchasing and procuring materials for research projects as it relates to the policies and procedures of Procurement.
  • Responsible for maintenance of program vehicles and farm equipment.
  • Accurately keep an inventory of supplies, chemicals, and pesticides for the program while making sure PI stays in full compliance with USDA, EPD regulations governing storage and usage of these materials.

  • Maintain a valid pesticide applicator's license.
  • Responsible for safety and related issues for research programs.
  • Modify field and laboratory experimental procedures and inform project leader of changes when necessary.
  • Work with regional extension specialist and professors.

  • Manage and execute field, laboratory, and greenhouse research, which includes equipment operations and data collection.
  • Coordinate and collaborate field and greenhouse research activities with Field Research Services and Branch Station personnel at Westbrook, Dempsey, and other research stations across Georgia.
