ASR-IT Manager, Student Data Analytics

About the position
The ASR-IT Student Data Analytics (SDA) Manager leads a team responsible for delivering data analysis, business intelligence, and operational reporting solutions that inform decision-making across Academic Support Resources and the broader University of Minnesota community. This role combines strategic leadership, technical oversight, and stakeholder engagement to ensure that student-related data is accurate, accessible, and actionable. The manager oversees analytics project prioritization, team development, and cross-functional collaboration while advancing data governance, innovation, and institutional goals related to student success, equity, and operational excellence.

The position requires strong leadership in data strategy and the ability to translate complex data into insights that drive continuous improvement across the student experience.
Academic Support Resources supports hybrid and flexible working arrangements. Work arrangements are determined in coordination with supervisors depending on the nature of the unit and position. The arrangement for this position will be determined upon hire between employee and supervisor.

Essential Functions
Leadership and Management: 55%

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Student Data Analytics team, overseeing team priorities, performance, and professional development.
  • Define and implement strategies for the ongoing support of student data operational reporting, including ongoing maintenance; needs assessment; and report delivery.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative, and accountable culture aligned with ASR and University goals.
  • Serve as a liaison for student data initiatives with the Office of Information Technology and other institutional stakeholders.
  • Incorporate equity-minded approaches to data analysis, ensuring insights support inclusive policies and practices across the institution.
  • Explore emerging technologies and methodologies in analytics (e.g., AI/ML, predictive modeling) to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Serve as a joint product owner within our UM Analytics platform. Leading efforts to develop, maintain, and enhance an established OBIEE (Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition) cloud platform.

Operations and Project Management: 30%

  • Direct the execution of data analytics and reporting initiatives through established intake processes, prioritization frameworks, and project management protocols.
  • Ensure projects meet milestones, comply with quality standards, and maintain system resilience through disaster recovery planning and issue resolution protocols.
  • Manage established work intake processes for analytics and operational reporting work, making adjustments as needed to support work prioritization and flow.
  • Oversee initiatives to develop and maintain documentation adhering to data governance standards.
  • Provide high level guidance and at times verify data modeling code and methodologies. Understanding grain level data and star schemas.
  • Develops, maintains, and uses cloud visual analytics platforms such as tableau.

Stakeholder and Cross-Functional Engagement: 15%

  • Cultivate partnerships with ASR, Undergraduate Education, and university-wide stakeholders to ensure data solutions meet evolving business needs.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that improve institutional data capabilities and operational efficiency.
  • Represent ASR-IT, ASR, and/or Office of Undergraduate Education in cross-functional initiatives.
  • Partner with Enterprise Data Management & Reporting (EDMR) to promote data quality, stewardship, and compliance with privacy and security policy

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS plus at least six years of relevant work experience, or master's degree plus at least four years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with data and reporting in a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experiencing leading and managing individuals.
  • Strong technical aptitude, analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Experience in Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.
  • Experience with coding: SQL, Python, R.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $99,243 - $104,332 annually, depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
