Summary
Provides leadership, training, validations, and daily supervision of the donor center staff to ensure the team functions as a cohesive unit. Mastered all competencies of a Blood Donor Technician. Appointed as charge on mobile blood drives in the absence of a charge nurse. Leads the team of donor technicians, manages donor flow, and is responsible for the end-of-day audits of products on mobile blood drives. The Blood Donor Technician Lead complies with AABB standards, FDA regulations, and other regulatory agency guidelines. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions Interviews donors to determine eligibility according to the donor selection criteria of the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, including medical history and physical examination, and provides the donor with the opportunity to ask questions and provides an explanation to assure the donor's understanding. Follows established criteria for the temporary/permanent deferral of donors to prevent inadvertent collection from a donor who is ineligible, and documents Informed Consent of a blood or apheresis donor prior to collection; explains elements of the donation procedure, including information on risks of the procedure and tests performed. Performs whole blood collection using established sterile technique in preparation of phlebotomy site, and platelet pheresis collection using the apheresis system. Maintains continuity of donor identification by carefully labeling all collection bags and pilot tubes and assuring the volume collected is appropriate. Performs daily quality control, including daily scale calibration and other equipment used in the selection and collection process, and is responsible for the documentation and corrective action as needed. May work on mobile blood drives at locations throughout Massachusetts, and assists in maintaining adequate inventory of necessary supplies for the Donor Center and Off-Site Mobile Blood Drives. Transports blood products to the blood bank, while following all safety and infection control policies, maintains a clean work area, and performs other duties as required at the Donor Center and Off-Site Mobile Blood Drives. Maintains professional image at all times and serves as a role model to colleagues. Functions as a preceptor for training new blood donor technicians and/or precepting students, and develops education for staff and conducts in-services as needed. Provides leadership and impacts the workplace in a positive manner. Works together as a team with charge nurse and fellow colleagues.
