Job Description

We are looking for a highly capable Senior Garage Underwriter to join our team. This role will underwrite Garage and Companion Auto new business and renewals according to authority level and established guidelines and participate in special projects.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:

  • Review complex policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority.
  • Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state.
  • Consult with general agents to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain underwriting guidelines.
  • Assist in the training of departmental personnel.
  • Provide technical expertise to the Underwriting department in determining rate and product changes and during Product Line Reviews.
  • Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports.
  • Accountable and responsible for the performance of assigned underwriting territory, including growth and profitability.
  • Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents and travel to agent offices.
  • Complete all assigned tasks according to department standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Core qualifications and requirements for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five years underwriting experience with authority, preferably in excess and surplus lines Garage business.
  • Previous insurance educational work, IIA and CPCU desirable.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to travel (including pre and post trip preparations).
  • Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook

The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.

* Colorado outside of Denver metro, Maryland, Massachusetts (outside of Boston metro area), Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Vermont Pay Ranges: $92,600 - 124,900

* Boston metro area, California outside of Los Angeles & San Francisco metro area, Connecticut, Chicago metro area, Denver metro area, New Jersey (outside of New York City metro area), New York State (outside of New York City metro area), & Washington State Pay Ranges: $101,900 - 137,500

* New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco metro areas Pay Ranges: $111,200 - 149,900
