What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) Organization is seeking an Engineering Program Project Lead (EPPL) for Radiological Operations within Department 4616, Radiological Operations II, is a key leadership position within the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) corporate Radiation Protection Organization (04610). The 04616 EPPL will lead a team(s) of Health Physicists and Radiological Control Technologists (RCTs) in providing essential day-to-day support services to all SNL Line organizations and facilities engaged in radiological work, as well as the implementation of the SNL corporate occupational Radiation Protection Program in accordance with DOE 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 830, and associated DOE Orders and directives. RO2 will also extend their support to the broader RP Program.

In this role, the EPPL will provide radiological support to line organizations as needed, which includes but is not limited to:



  • Interpreting and implementing the RP Chapter of the ES&H Manual.


Conducting hazard analyses and developing appropriate controls for proposed radiological activities.



  • Recommending suitable radiological controls to ensure compliance and safety.


The 04616 EPPL will implement 10 CFR 835 and other DOE regulatory drivers, leveraging engineering and technical expertise to ensure safe mission execution and performance. This position is responsible for developing projects and systems that meet regulatory requirements while identifying necessary work products. The 04616 EPPL will define project initiatives, objectives, deliverables, budgets, and schedules; acquire and manage resources for planning, tracking, and executing projects from initiation to closeout; monitor cost, schedule, and performance; and integrate systems engineering, configuration management, risk management, and quality standards into all projects.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Primary Point-of-Contact: Act as the primary point-of-contact (POC) for RP support, providing technical direction and recommending RP work controls for designated Line Customers.

  • Service Assurance: Ensure that acceptable RP services are provided to Line Customers in accordance with approved RP procedures.

  • Emergency Notifications: Serve as the primary POC for customer events and emergency notifications to the RP Manager or designee, ensuring timely and effective communication.

  • Emergency Response Coordination: Function as an RP point-of-contact (RPOC) for the emergency response group, facilitating preparedness and response efforts.

  • Strategic Integration: Perform local strategy and integration to align RP efforts with organizational goals and objectives.

  • Performance Review Input: Provide input for performance reviews of team members to management, promoting accountability and development.

  • Service Conduct Oversight: Ensure the proper conduct of RP support services by programs and ROs.

  • Radiological Controls Concurrence: Concur with radiological controls in line-owned radiological Technical Work Documents (TWDs) and routine survey schedules.

  • Technical Support: Provide technical support to the RP Program, assisting in procedure and policy development, assessments, and compliance verification functions.

  • Team Leadership: Direct the activities of radiological engineers assigned to the team, ensuring effective project execution.

  • Oral Board Participation: Participate in Oral Boards as required, contributing expertise and insights.



Issue/Event Reporting Assistance: Assist the Line with issue/event reports, ensuring thorough documentation and follow-up.



  • Mentorship: Mentor and assist in the career development of Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) and other personnel, fostering professional growth.

  • Emergency Management Support: Support Emergency Management operations through drills and exercises and respond to real emergency situations as needed.

  • Work Review and Approval: Review and approve work from radiological engineers or technologists, ensuring compliance with established standards.

  • Self-Assessment Participation: Participate in self-assessments and provide peer reviews for other Project Leaders and Radiological Engineers.

  • Documentation Development: Write, develop, and review Radiological Protection Orders (RPOs), Radiological Protection Assessments (RPAs), Technical Basis Documents, and the RP chapter of the ES&H Manual.

  • Training Requirements Definition: Define team-specific training requirements and develop TWDs as necessary to support operational needs.

  • Decision Basis Documents: Develop Decision Basis Documents to support RP initiatives and decision-making processes.

  • Continuity Documentation: Create continuity documents to support future project leaders, including customer contacts, training requirements, and considerations for unique work activities.



Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities may include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at SNL in Albuquerque, NM.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related appropriate physical science, plus (5) years of directly related experience.

  • Working knowledge of 10 CFR 835 and/or 10 CFR 20, and 10 CFR 830.

  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and maintaining a DOE or NRC occupational radiation protection program.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:

Masters degree in health physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related appropriate physical science and extensive operational health physics work experience.

  • Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven R & D environments.

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between projects quickly and effectively.

  • Proven record of independently developing solutions to collaboratively lead a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.

  • American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification.

  • Active DOE-L or Q-level level security clearance.



About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization (Group 4610) provides radiation protection services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include translation of DOE directives and federal regulations into SNL-specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.
