Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Equity (AVC), the Associate Director of Institutional Equity (AD) is responsible for implementing prompt, effective, and appropriate responses to reports of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation prohibited by the University's nondiscrimination policies.

This position supervises Investigators and oversee the handling of reports of discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, religion, age, or protected veteran status. Incidents may involve students, staff, visitors or third parties, and/or faculty members as parties or witnesses, including faculty who also serve as physicians within the MU Healthcare System and individuals employed by MU Extension. AD also oversees cases involving UM System employees, as well as conflict cases for other institutions within the System.

The AD will assess and assign incoming reports and consult with campus partners throughout the Equity and Title IX processes, including Human Resources, Residential Life, Office of Student Accountability & Support, Provost's Office, MUPD, and the Department of Athletics. The AD will oversee implementation of supportive measures and informal conflict resolution methods; provide guidance to Equity Consultants/Investigators on their investigations; monitor complaint activity for patterns; and collaborate with each other and the AVC on various data projects and ongoing assessment of internal practices and templates to ensure compliance with institutional policies. The AD will have authority to make day-to-day decisions in active cases, and they regularly consult with the AVC and the Office of the General Counsel on larger-impact decisions. Additionally, they make referrals and provide updates to various stakeholders, as needed.

The AD ensures compliance with new and ongoing changes to regulations and relevant laws, at the state and national levels; monitor and evaluate UM System polices; recommend changes to meet evolving needs; update internal protocols to ensure best practices; maintain a library of examples and resources for all UM System Title IX offices; and are responsible for onboarding new Investigators and conducting ongoing internal trainings for team members.

The AD acts as a delegate for the AVC in training and education efforts, communications with parties and relevant departments, complaint processing, investigations, drafting of formal correspondence and written decisions, preparation of case status reports and summaries, climate assessments, compilation of Annual Reports, fulfillment of public records requests, and related duties as necessary.

Shift

Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 8 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired.
  • 1-3 years of experience conducting investigations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
  • Experience in program/policy evaluation and development of training on related topics.
  • Experience in public higher education.
  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • Recent certification(s) in Title IX and/or Civil Rights investigation or coordination.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $92,955.20 - $102,000 annually
