Conflicts Attorney
Steptoe LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking a Conflicts Attorney to join its Team. This position is based in the Washington, DC office or may be filled remotely.

The Conflicts Attorney will support the firm-wide new business intake process, lateral hire conflicts clearance process, and related conflicts and business intake processes. Work with lawyers in all offices including internationally, in a high-charged, fast-paced work environment. Identifies, analyzes, and resolves or makes recommendations for the resolution of potential conflicts of interest related to new firm business. The Conflicts Attorney reviews and drafts waivers, and reviews both engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines. Must be able to communicate clearly with all team members and stakeholders. The expected salary for this position is $150,000 - $160,000, depending on experience.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately apply Ethics Rules to clear conflict of interest issues.
  • Work with Director of Conflicts and Intake Compliance (CIC) and Ethics Partner on conflicts analysis and resolution as needed.
  • Work with partners and the Office of the General Counsel to negotiate and draft waivers, disclosures, and engagement letters.
  • Work with firm management to resolve any business conflict issues identified.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Intapp Open system and other technology/platforms used in CIC.
  • Conduct legal research related to conflicts of interest, new business intake, and firm policies related to same.
  • Prepare communications to lawyers and others, clearly identifying all potential issues found in conflict reports to facilitate clearance process.
  • Assist in development and implementation of training programs for CIC staff.
  • Provide guidance to CIC staff in areas of conflicts analysis and resolution and new business intake.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of current policies and firm best practices, and act as a resource in answering questions from other firm personnel with respect to the new business intake process, and policies.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) and admission to local bar (active and in good standing); admission to DC bar preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the DC Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Two years of experience in a law firm or other professional services firm in a lawyer role is preferred. Additionally, at least two years of conflicts-related work in a law firm, along with legal writing and research experience that aligns with the skills and responsibilities outlined in this position, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to turn around work under high pressure, independently manage production of work with short deadlines, and meet overall timeliness demands for the new business opening process.
  • Consistent attention to detail.

  • Facility with computer systems in use at law firms including business intake systems and research systems such as Moody's, Bureau van Dijk (Orbis, Compliance Catalyst, World Compliance), LexisNexis and others.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to urgent requests outside regular business hours.

Work Environment
  • Non-Smoking environment.
  • Available to work in the office during regular office hours Monday through Friday.
  • Must be able to work beyond regular hours and be available on-call.
  • Must be able to work under tight deadlines and skillfully manage high-pressure demands.
