Summary of Job Duties:This position is expected to assist in the import/export of animals.

The Animal Services Specialist works as an Animal Technical Specialist primarily under the direct supervision of the Animal Technical Manager, performing breeding and technical Services associated with supporting the Technical Services Core in DLAM. The Animal Technical Specialist is expected to be familiar with all regulatory guidelines and their implementation and stay up to date with the current standard of care for research animals, including rodents and other regulated species on campus. The largest portion of this position is assisting with DLAM's Technical Services Core. This position is responsible for performing some or all of the animal work for research projects. The Animal Technical Specialist requires proficiency in several biomethods, including but not limited to dosing, vascular access, surgical assistance, anesthesia induction and monitoring, necropsies, and data collection, identifying animals, record keeping for breeding colony management. The expectation is that this person will train others on this skill set. Qualifications:
  • Associates plus 4 years' experience in animal research or

  • Bachelor's degree plus 2 years' experience in animal research required.

  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level within 3 years of employment.

  • Extended periods of walking, moving large equipment, handling heavy loads, and standing.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs some or all of the techniques related to an experimental project, including dosing, vascular access, identifying animals, surgical support, necropsy, and tissue harvest. They will assist the investigators with experimental logistics based on experience and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Consistent and methodical practices are required to reduce variables for the experiment. Clear and concise documentation and communication of all experimental methods, techniques, and results are expected.

  • Manages several breeding colonies belonging to campus investigators in conjunction with the Animal Technical Specialist. They will manage the colonies by performing the following services for the investigators: Creating and maintaining records of breeding, pairing, offspring, genotypes, culled animals, and experimental animals.

  • Tracks and reports available colony animals to the investigator as needed for experimental purposes. During the weaning process, special care will be taken to follow all policies regarding cage housing density, social housing, and cage handling procedures. Transfer of cage card information and animal ID is critical for experiments based on age and genotype. Health assessment of all weanlings for common clinical conditions will be performed at weaning. Verification of age based on DOB and animal development.

  • Responsible for all quarantine animals. They will maintain the facility according to the facility BSL 2 standards and quarantine SOP. Perform all husbandry duties, clinical care, and breeding needs for animals housed in quarantine.

  • Coordinates the receipt of animals from the Non-Vendor Source and verifies the correct receipt of animals.

  • Performs all sample collection, submission, and review of results for all animals in quarantine as scheduled to ensure animals are treated for and free of all excluded pathogens before animals are released to the general housing areas. This position requires proactive evaluation, clear communication, and advice to the investigator regarding genotyping and breeding to establish the best foundation.

  • Handles all hands-on training of basic and technical skills required by investigators and their staff to perform experimental studies.

  • Provides guidance regarding handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia while stressing the importance of animal welfare and all associated guidelines.

  • Works with the individual and reports progress as needed to the PI, DLAM, and compliance

  • Serves as a member of the clinical staff as needed. To include examination of sick animals and communication with research staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
