Position Summary:
The Finance and Accounting Director is responsible for the strategic development, execution, and oversight of the organization's full spectrum of financial and accounting functions. This includes the development of annual budgets, multi-year financial planning, and adherence to internal controls, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and CSU policies. The Director is responsible for the integrity and accuracy of all accounting systems, general ledger functions, financial reporting, and the coordination of external audits. This position oversees key financial operations such as Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll coordination, grant billing, and all cash flow activity, ensuring transparent and efficient fiscal management across the organization.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director and collaborates with department leaders to align financial and accounting practices with UAS strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Lead the development, consolidation, and presentation of the annual organizational budget.
- Develop and maintain multi-year financial forecasts and scenario models.
- Analyze variances between actual and budgeted figures and recommend corrective actions.
- Partner with department heads to develop programmatic and operational budgets that align with strategic priorities.
Cash Flow, Reporting, and Analysis
- Supervise Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions to ensure timely invoicing, collections, disbursements, and cash flow optimization.
- Monitor cash balances and make strategic recommendations for reserve management and liquidity.
- Prepare regular financial reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and external stakeholders, including funding agencies.
Payroll and Grant Coordination
- Coordinate with the Payroll team to ensure accurate expense allocation and reporting.
- Oversee billing, tracking, and proper accounting for grant and contract funds, including ensuring compliance with all close-out procedures.
Leadership and Staff Development
- Supervise accounting and finance team members, providing mentorship, oversight, and performance management.
- Conduct financial and budget training for program managers and administrative staff to enhance financial literacy and ownership.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission, goals, and efficiency of UAS Services and campus operations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or related field required.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in budgeting or financial management, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience in non-profit finance.
- Strong analytical and forecasting skills.
- Proficiency in financial software and reporting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Adaptive Insights).
- Superior communication and organizational skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit financial regulations.
- MBA and/or CPA preferred and highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in non-profit finance, specifically in higher education.
- Experience managing pre- and post-award grant administration.
- Experience conducting PI training and providing fiscal support to program staff.
Work Environment:
This is a full-time, in-person position. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for board meetings or reporting deadlines.
