Job Summary

Directs law enforcement personnel in the performance of duties related to the protection of life andproperty,enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, prevention of crime,preservation of the public peace, apprehension of suspected law violators,and the rendering of aid or service in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of theGSU Divisionof PublicSafety. Provides field support through assumption of all duties and responsibilities required of a police officer.Responsible for ensuring ongoing training professional development of assigned personnel, maintenance of good order and discipline,administrative tasks, and evaluation of personnel.This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. A CSA is an individual who, by virtue of their responsibilities,is designated to receive and obligated to report criminal incidents to the institution's Clery Coordinator for publication in the Annual Security Report.This position involves shift work based on the needs of GSU and the Division of Public Safety.Employees may be required to remain on duty beyond a normal shift and must be available to report for duty without prior notice due to on-call status, special events, emergencies, or personnel shortages.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, assign, direct, and review work and activities of subordinate personnel during an assigned shift; supervise police response to a variety of law enforcement situations; provide guidance and direction to subordinate personnel
  • Perform all duties outlined in the police officer job description
  • Receive, review, approve, or direct the correction of submitted reports and documentation
  • Monitor work activities and conduct periodic personnel and equipment inspections to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and directives
  • Conduct performance evaluations on subordinate personnel; counsel personnel on work performance and document strengths and deficiencies; respond to, investigate, and resolve citizen complaints regarding police activities
  • Provide direct instruction through delivery of in-service and/or roll call training; mentor subordinate personnel in career development
  • Responsible for approval of timesheet submissions and requests for leave
  • Brief the chain of command on investigative matters, personnel concerns, and/or critical incidents
  • Fulfill annual professional development/training requirements as prescribed by the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council, Georgia Southern University, and the Division of Public Safety
  • Promote positive campus relations through delivery of crime prevention programming and active involvement in campus events


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Other Required Qualifications
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Peace Officer Certification (in good standing)
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Peace Officer Certification (in good standing)
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Supervision Certification
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Instructor - Level 1 Basic / In-Service (or higher)
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Field Training Officer Certification
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated (Class C or higher)

Required Experience
  • Three (3) of more years of related experience


Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of requisite Georgia P.O.S.T. specialty / career development certifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Associates degree or at least (60) semester hours of earned academic credit

Preferred Experience
  • (5) or more years of progressive law enforcement experience
  • (2) or more years of law enforcement supervisory experience


Proposed Salary

$24.12 - $30.74 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.

  • Competency in the application of modern methods, procedures, and techniques used in providing a full range of law enforcement and crime prevention services and activities including investigation and identification, patrol, traffic control, record keeping, records management, automated records systems, search and seizure, care and custody of persons and property, and crime prevention.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of policies, procedures, general orders, and directives regarding conduct of personnel, field operations, critical incidents, preliminary investigations, and documentation / reporting protocols
  • Competency in the design, organization, and delivery of in-service training programs to meet the development needs of personnel and effectively evaluate program results

  • Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills
  • Skill in the application of knowledge and reasoning to make prompt, rational, and effective decisions in both routine and emergency situations (e.g., being decisive when immediate action is required); may include ambiguous situations where there is incomplete information and unknown factors.
