Job Description Summary:As part of its core mission, the NSF NCAR Library delivers expert information services in support of the advancement of Earth system science. The Library Technician I is responsible for creating a welcoming environment for visitors, answering routine questions, and helping with essential library activities such as book circulation and shelving, clerical tasks, and supporting librarians on projects.

This position also supports the Library Operations team in providing access to Library collections and services, and optimizing the customer experience when using the Library.

This is a part-time position: 8-12 hours per week, working on-site at the Mesa Lab. Preferred shift hours are Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday from 9 am-1 pm, but there is some flexibility. Position Details:

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Perform Front Desk Duties:

  • Greet visitors, answer questions, and handle telephone calls.

  • Answer basic questions or refer scientific research questions to librarians, as appropriate.

  • Handle mail requests.

  • Retrieve books from shelves, reshelve them, and ensure that they are shelved appropriately.

  • Help maintain the tidiness of the ML library.

  • Work directly with patrons to facilitate access to and use of library resources (cataloging, circulation, InterLibrary Loan, marketing, etc.).

Library Operations Team:

  • Attend weekly team meetings.

  • Assist with other projects as assigned.

  • Provide backup for reference and InterLibrary Loan, as needed.

Education and Experience

REQUIRED

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two years relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience.

DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Experience working at NCAR/UCAR/UPC.

  • Experience working in a library environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent customer service skills to include school-age children and those with disabilities.

  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent listening skills.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate with the work of others.

  • Skill using Google Drive, Microsoft suite, and other regular office computer technologies.

  • Physical ability to perform moderate lifting, carrying, and maneuvering associated with job duties.
