POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Fire Protection Engineer I plays a key role in the successful execution of projects. This individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, as well as successful delivery of work to our customers. The Fire Protection Engineer I is responsible for a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and managed - both externally and internally. The successful candidate will contribute to a dynamic team environment by being proactive, communicating clearly and frequently, and modeling a highly collaborative working environment. The Fire Protection Engineer will work to develop a comprehensive understanding of fire protection systems and can understand and apply appropriate codes and standards.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Prepares fire protection systems layout and detailed drawings to produce a complete set of construction drawings in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
- Performs accurate design calculations, including hydraulic calculations, using software such as AutoSPRINK or HydraCAD.
- Leads drawing revision efforts and drafting as needed to finalize drawing packages for client deliverables (Revit).
- Performs QA/QC reviews of deliverables to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assists in preparing engineering documents, reports, and specifications to meet contracted scope of work.
- Provides recommendations regarding system/equipment feasibility and evaluates products for application.
- Assists project leads with drafting technical bid scopes of work.
- Performs site surveys and hydrant flow tests.
- Conducts construction administration tasks, including attending meetings, reviewing change orders, and responding to RFIs.
- Reviews fire protection contractor shop drawings for compliance with design intent and standards.
- May serve as project manager for some complete projects and will participate in coordinating a project team.
- Provides technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines.
- Coordinates system design with other disciplines, consultants, and utilities.
- May provide work direction to team members and subcontractors, as assigned.
- Interacts with clients to cross-market other professionals and services provided within the company.
- Participates in fire risk assessments and communicates findings to project stakeholders.
- Coordinates work with internal and external stakeholders, providing technical support and work direction as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent.
- 0-4 + years of fire protection design and/or project management experience.
- Fire alarm/mass notification system design.
- Smoke ventilation and smoke control systems design.
- Strong interpersonal skills to enable effective interaction with Designers, Engineers and Project Managers.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated maturity and self-confidence to work with colleagues and customers.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Adaptable and agile, responsive to quick changes in direction.
- Ability to establish rapport and credibility with customers and other stakeholders.

- Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% (domestic travel).
Preferred:
- Willingness to pursue Professional Engineering registration.
- NICET Level III or IV in Water-Based Systems Layout.
- Special Hazards Fire Suppression Systems experience.
- Ability to determine occupancy loads and evacuation provisions.
- Basic understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, and Structural Engineering construction practices.
- Proficiency with design and specification software tools, including:
- SpecLink, HydraCAD/HydraCALC, and AutoSPRINK
- Revit or HydraCAD for Revit
Working Conditions
- Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.
