Summary:

Under the general supervision of Clinical Director, the Senior Teacher, and the Behavior Coordinator, Behavior Specialists function as members of the multidisciplinary team.

They are responsible for the care and safety of assigned students, which involves recreational planning, assistance with educational programming and planning, behavioral management, and crisis intervention.

They provide input into the formulation of a therapeutic treatment plan and the implementation, observation, and documentation of this program.

They are responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of school-wide and classroom based behavioral treatment plans, and assist the Senior Teacher and Behavioral Coordinator with recreational and educational activities.

They provide floating, rather than classroom-based, coverage within the program.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in providing coverage to assigned students and classrooms.
  • Identifies, reports, and actively attempts to resolve potential/actual problems in the classrooms.
  • Develops alliance with bus staff and assists with difficulties in this area.
  • Supports and contributes to the development and implementation of all treatment goals in conjunction with classroom-based staff, the Senior Teacher, and Behavioral Coordinator.
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop and implement behavioral treatment plans.
  • Coordinates and implements program activities and education programs.
  • Assists with educational and recreational activities and with teaching self-care and social skills.
  • Consistently models appropriate and therapeutic interpersonal staff/student interactions
  • Transports students as assigned.
  • Purchases materials with available funds for above as assigned.
  • Carries out lesson plans if teacher is called away from the room
  • Demonstrates excellent and independent child behavior management skills.
  • Can anticipate, address, and deescalate disruptive student situations in a safe, timely, and effective manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead physical restraint teams, providing guidance and leadership to other team members.
  • Demonstrates the ability to handle crisis management situations in calm, effective, and consistent manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with students between the ages of 3 and 21 years.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal sensitivity, provides encouragement and support to students.
  • Remains aware of, and uses thoughts feelings and perceptions when processing student behavior.
  • Handles crisis situations in a timely, safe, and effective manner.
  • Develops and supports therapeutic alliance with students and families.
  • Exhibits leadership ability in role as Behavior Specialist.
  • Demonstrates initiative in organizing and implementing therapeutic recreational activities.
  • Provides guidance, monitoring, and role modeling to less senior staff during activities and groups.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate in a direct and assertive manner with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize effective problem-solving approaches to resolve conflicts.
  • Offers information and knowledge acquired through experience to other staff as needed or assigned.
  • Demonstrates professional interpersonal behavior when interacting with co-workers.
  • Demonstrates outstanding initiative in organizing classroom groups and/or covering for teacher/CBS.
  • Orients new students, staff (as directed) and volunteers in an organized and thorough fashion.
  • Maintains a positive attitude about job responsibilities and sets an example for less senior staff in this area.
  • Adheres to all hospital, departmental, and program policies and procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings as assigned.
  • Maintains current certification in CPI.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Attends all program staff development activities as assigned.
  • Consistently follows all school, departmental, and program policies and procedures, and reviews these as assigned.
  • Is aware of departmental and program QI, infection control, risk management, and safety indicators, and responsibilities related to such.
  • Is punctual, reliable, and judiciously uses floating and sick time as per hospital and school policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of school organizational chart and consistently communicates issues and concerns through that structure.
  • Participates in formal and informal supervision and incorporates suggestions for improvement/change in job performance.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE-EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Child Care or Baccalaureate Degree in the Human Services field (may by waived at discretion of department head)

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience working with emotional/behaviorally disordered children and adolescents demonstrating progressive responsibility and leadership development

Valid driver 's license and good driving record

Computer literacy and experience with relevant software applications preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in a psychological clinic for children and adolescents environment.
