Summary:

The System Risk Manager reports to the Director Risk Management and provides risk management support to Rhode Island Hospital (RIH), The Miriam Hospital (TMH), Newport Hospital and Bradley Hospital in the Site Risk Manager’s absence. Under general direction and according to established policies and procedures, plans and manages a comprehensive hospital-wide Risk Management program which identifies and reduces or eliminates situations which expose the corporation to actual or potential loss or liability. Evaluates and minimizes risks that may result in property loss or damage, legal liability or injury to patients, employees, volunteers, students, visitors and physicians. Participates in a variety of patient safety activities. Has responsibility for being liaison to select regulatory agencies and for working with claims analysts and attorneys on liability issues.

Responsibilities:

In the absence of the Site Risk Manager, the System Risk Manager is responsible for core risk management services at the assigned Brown University Health affiliate under the general supervision of the Director, Risk Management. Provides direct supervision and training to the other Risk Management staff assigned to the affiliate.

Maintains a working knowledge of the System’s insurance programs. Assists in the investigation, evaluation, processing, and reporting of all claims and losses in compliance with Brown University Health insurance companies and/or governmental policies, rules and regulations. Works independently with insurance analysts and attorneys in researching and responding to correspondence and discovery requests on professional and general liability cases. Manages or works with the department which manages the in-house patient complaint and grievance program. Activities may include coordinating the flow of patient complaint information within Hospital and monitoring for follow-up/resolution within designated time frame.

Ensures compliance with guidelines and standards for the Joint Commission, Department of Health and other regulatory agencies. Reports occurrences mandated by law or regulation to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Attorney General’s office, the FDA, etc. Coordinates the follow up process and provides additional information to these agencies as needed. Acts as liaison to Department of Health investigators for on-site incident and complaint investigations.

Performs record reviews, investigations and evaluations of actual or potential patient safety events that have the potential for litigation or reporting to external agencies. Works closely with other departments at the affiliate to analyze the root causes of potential or actual patient safety events.

Provides guidance, assistance, and support to hospital/medical staff efforts to implement risk management and regulatory standards. Prepares reports for trend analysis, quarterly reports for department and Chairs’ needs and monthly reports for various committees.

In the absence of the Site Risk Manager, the System Risk Manager develops and presents educational programs on Risk Management for physicians, staff and remote office staff.

In the absence of the Site Risk Manager, the System Risk Manager participates in various affiliate quality improvement and patient safety activities, including attending committee meetings. Attends other affiliate meetings as needed to provide risk management support.

Provides Risk Management support to other Brown University Health facilities and Corporate office, as required by director.

Performs other activities as required.

Other information:

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:

Degree in Nursing, with current RN licensure. Consideration may be given for other healthcare degree.

QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:

At least two years nursing or other similar healthcare experience, plus three to five years’ experience in Risk Management or comparable activities, demonstrating knowledge of information systems, patient safety issues and quality assurance methodology. Knowledge of electronic medical records, databases, and word processing software.

SUPERVISION:

Supervises other Risk Management staff assigned to the affiliate.
