Position Overview
Unit Overview:
University Academic Support Centers (UASC) is a comprehensive student support program consisting of three unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University's commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Success.

The Access Specialist assists prospective and currently enrolled students with disabilities and is responsible for analyzing disability documentation, determining reasonable accommodations, developing programs and resources to meet students' needs, advising students regarding the interactive process and their rights and responsibilities relating to accommodations. The Access Specialist consults with faculty on the implementation of approved accommodations. This a full-time, 12-month, in-person position and reports to the Associate Director, Student Access Center. The person in this position is responsible for having knowledge of and being in compliance with Board of Regent sand University policies, understanding NCAA rules and regulations applicable to the day-to-day job-related activities applicable to the position that could involve contact with student athletes, and having a working knowledge of ADA regulations.

Job Description
70%:
  • Consult with prospective, intake, and currently registered students and their families/parents regarding academic accommodations.
  • Review disability documentation to determine eligibility and reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations.
  • Facilitate the registration and accommodation processes in the Access Online system.
20%:
  • Provide academic coaching for students with disabilities regarding academic concerns such as planning and time management.
10%:
  • Other duties as assigned (which may include exam proctoring).

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree PLUS three (3) years' related experience OR a master's degree PLUS one (1) year related experience.
  2. Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, as evidenced by application materials.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous experience working with a wide range of student populations, as demonstrated by cover letter and resume.
  2. One (1) year of experience providing academic accommodations for college students with disabilities or academic advising college students, as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Previous experience that required excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as demonstrated through application materials.
