About Optum AI

Optum AI is UnitedHealth Group's dedicated AI/ML division, driving innovation across UnitedHealthcare, Optum Health, Optum Financial, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. Our team builds transformative AI/ML solutions and the platform infrastructure that enables the enterprise to adopt and scale them responsibly. We work at the intersection of groundbreaking machine learning and real-world healthcare delivery leveraging deep expertise, rich datasets, and a unified mission to build the next generation of intelligent systems.

As a Technical Program Manager at Optum AI, you'll lead complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives that shape the future of our Agentic AI Platform an LLM-powered environment for building intelligent agents that automate enterprise workflows across UHG.

You'll be responsible for driving clarity, execution, and long-term impact in a fast-evolving space. This means balancing technical depth with cross-team coordination, enabling engineering to build with confidence, and helping teams focus on the right problems at the right time. You'll influence its roadmap, orchestrate foundational delivery, and ensure the platform is both secure and developer-friendly for teams across our enterprise.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Own execution across high-impact programs within the Agentic AI platform, including agent orchestration, LLM integration, and low-code/no-code workflow automation
  • Partner deeply with engineering and product leads to scope and sequence milestones, evaluate tradeoffs, and ensure alignment with platform and enterprise goals
  • Write clear, concise functional specs and roadmaps, and drive stakeholder alignment through transparent status updates and outcome reporting
  • Manage ambiguity with confidence: rapidly bring clarity to technical, organizational, or compliance-related uncertainty, making unblock decisions that move teams forward
  • Ensure secure and compliant delivery by embedding security, governance, and AI safety considerations throughout the software lifecycle
  • Balance roadmap goals with emerging use cases, bringing user focus to every technical conversation and product decision
  • Build solid relationships with engineering, security, product, and compliance stakeholders across multiple business units-rallying teams around shared outcomes
  • Be a voice of technical reasoning and user empathy, helping platform teams prioritize what matters most, not just what's next

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of technical program management or product management experience, especially in enterprise software or AI/ML environments
  • Deep experience managing programs that require coordination across engineering, security and compliance
  • Experience navigating and resolving technical ambiguity from architectural tradeoffs without losing sight of the user
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional software engineering programs from idea through delivery in matrixed or platform organizations
  • Proven solid grasp of AI/ML infrastructure and use cases
  • Proven clear and concise communicator who builds trust with engineers, product teams, and senior leadership alike

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in highly regulated environments (e.g., healthcare) and with HIPAA-compliant AI/ML systems
  • Experience in working with LLMs, RAG, orchestration engines, or agent-based systems
  • Understanding of workflow builders, developer SDKs, or low-code platforms
  • A track record of improving platform reliability, observability, or scalability through clear prioritization and architectural collaboration
