Position Description:

The University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Medical Student Clerkship Director. Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level on either the tenure track or the clinical (non-tenure) track, consistent with prior experience and qualifications. The Clerkship Director will provide leadership, oversight, and guidance in all aspects of the undergraduate medical education mission for student rotators in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate will also maintain an active clinical emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine practice.

The general responsibilities for the successful candidate will include administration and oversight of the required Emergency Medicine clerkship, which is taken by all University of Iowa medical students during their core clinical year, and the advanced Emergency Medicine elective, one of the most popular senior student rotations. Specific duties include orienting, teaching, and evaluating rotating students; ensuring compliance with all collegiate objectives and LCME accreditation standards; participating in bimonthly Clinical Experiences Committee meetings; developing and delivering clerkship didactics; administering the end-of-rotation exam; and contributing to the standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE) process for students applying to Emergency Medicine residency. The Clerkship Director will be a member of the departmental education leadership team and will work closely with faculty, residents, and administrative staff to ensure excellence in the educational mission.

The Clerkship Director will report to the Department of Emergency Medicine Vice Chair for Education. The successful candidate will also provide leadership, mentoring, and oversight to the Assistant Clerkship Director, the Clerkship Coordinator, and all students and trainees rotating in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Clerkship Director will have dedicated administrative support and access to professional development opportunities supported by the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.



Education Requirement:


  • Applicants must have an MD/DO or equivalent.
  • Position requires completion of an ACGME-accredited training program in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine.


Required Qualifications:


  • Applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine at the time of hire.
  • Applicants must be eligible for an active Iowa medical license.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Ideal candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching, experience in undergraduate medical education, strong organizational and management skills, and a track record of adaptability and innovation.
  • Experience with medical student advising and evaluation are preferred.
