Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, in accordance with orders provided by veterinarians, provide technical support for the Large Animal Livestock Medicine and Surgery Unit. Provide routine and critical care to Livestock patients (cattle, sheep, goats, swine). Provide technical assistance to clinicians, residents, students and other technicians. Monitor & record maintain & recover anesthetized animals. Collect samples and perform diagnostic testing, restrain patients, use livestock chutes and equipment, administer treatments, maintain accurate medical records, perform surgical nursing, provide outpatient receiving support, monitor anesthesia. Provide on call coverage for Livestock Medicine and other Large Animal Clinic services. Maintain supplies and equipment, restock and clean and disinfect work areas and equipment, milk cows, instruct students and new technicians. Perform all duties in a way that does not result in actual or potential exposure of patients or personnel to infectious disease agents.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
- No minimum education required.
- Experience handling, restraining & working with livestock.
- Experience with medications and fluids commonly used in livestock.
- Experience monitoring patient's vital signs, observing & recording patient behavior & bodily functions, and experience with fluid therapy and catheter care.
- Oral & written communication & interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students & staff to ensure understanding in receiving & giving instructions.
- Skills to identify abnormal physical signs and appearances, while having basic knowledge of livestock husbandry, anatomy, behavior & basic physiology.
- Skills to perform mathematical calculations to calculate appropriate doses for patients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of anesthetic procedures including, monitoring, maintenance and recovery of patients from anesthesia.
- Skill to perform emergency care procedures & provide technical assistance during life threatening situations according to established protocols.
- Skill to instruct on basic technical diagnostic, nursing, livestock handling & husbandry procedures.
- Skill to perform aseptic techniques to assist with major and minor Livestock Surgical procedures.

May hold animals for radiology, undergoing MRI's and Nuclear scintigraphy. Work with new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities as they are developed and implemented. No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital. Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, where exposure to bodily fluids and waste from domestic farm animals may occur and handle potentially infectious biological specimens.
