Job Title: Part-time Information Sciences Professional (Entry - Intermediate Level) (0.50 FTE)

Job Summary:

The Language, Reasoning, and Knowledge (LARK) Lab, led by Dr. Yanjun Gao, is seeking a motivated part-time Research Services Professional to support ongoing research in natural language processing (NLP), artificial intelligence (AI), and their applications in healthcare. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while contributing to projects led by faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Gao and lab members to conduct literature reviews, assist with data curation, contribute to experiment setup and analysis, and help prepare publications. This position is ideal for an individual considering applying for a PhD program in the future, especially in the areas of AI, NLP, or biomedical informatics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support research projects in AI/NLP for healthcare, including literature search, data preprocessing, and preliminary analysis.

  • Assist postdocs and graduate students in running experiments and organizing research materials.

  • Help prepare manuscripts, presentations, and grant documents.

  • Maintain organized records of datasets, scripts, and project documentation.

  • Contribute to lab meetings and discussions, providing input on ongoing research.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related field.

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related field.

  • One (1) year data management and bioinformatic analyses experience.

A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year for year basis. An advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related field.

  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computing.

  • Experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R).

  • Prior experience with natural language processing, including transformers, large language models, and agentic workflow.

  • Experience with data preprocessing, model evaluation, and experiment reproducibility in a research setting.

  • Documented record of academic writing, presentations, or publications in relevant fields.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research.

  • Basic understanding of principles in natural language processing.

  • Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches.

  • Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python is preferred, R, Perl, Java, C++) and a willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary.

  • Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

  • Familiarity with natural language processing methods and tools, including transformers and large language models.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research team.

  • Familiarity with biomedical or clinical datasets and associated privacy considerations.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this part-time (0.5 FTE) position has been established as:

Entry Level: $26,051.50 - $33,137.50

Intermediate Level: $28,350 - $36,061.50

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
