Overview

TRC Companies (TRC) is seeking a Project Engineer I to join a program team that provides energy efficiency project services to property owners of multifamily affordable housing throughout California. The Project Engineer I will be responsible for reviewing project scopes of work and associated documentation submitted by the program's Energy Advisors to ensure compliance with program requirements, quality standards, and technical accuracy. This position requires strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and a solid understanding of energy efficiency program guidelines and building science principles.

The Project Engineer I will focus on internal review, oversight, and process improvement to help maintain consistency, accuracy, and compliance across all program projects and associated deliverables. The position is ideal for a candidate with 1-3 years of professional experience in the energy sector, quality assurance, or program compliance. Eligible candidates will be a hands-on, highly skilled resource and possess strong technical capabilities including knowledge of building systems and energy efficiency. Background and/or degrees in mechanical or energy engineering, sustainability and/or energy efficiency is preferred.

The position will be located in one of TRC's California offices: Irvine, San Diego, Rancho Cordova (Sacramento), Oakland, or San Francisco. Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Review and evaluate energy efficiency project scopes of work and associated documentation submitted by Energy Advisors for compliance with program rules, policies, and technical requirements.
  • Verify accuracy of project documentation, including energy audits, scope of work, cost estimates, and incentive calculations.
  • Ensure consistency of project data, reporting, and incentive applications across the program.
  • Identify errors, gaps, or inconsistencies in project files and provide clear feedback to Energy Advisors for resolution.
  • Conduct quality checks on energy benchmarking, inspection reports, and incentive requests.
  • Support program management in monitoring adherence to program requirements and recommending process improvements.
  • Maintain detailed project records in the program's customer relationship management (CRM) system with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Draft and deliver internal reports on quality review findings, trends, and compliance issues.
  • Coordinate with internal program staff, including Energy Advisors, operations, and management teams, to ensure consistent program delivery and high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in relevant Engineering area of study is required. Other fields are acceptable when accompanied with relevant work experience.
  • Interpersonal skills:
    • Self-driven and a team player with proven critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong teamwork skills that include highly effective communication in-person, over email, and over the phone.
    • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with program team members.
  • Organizational skills:
    • Exceptional organizational, time-management and planning skills.
    • Strong project management skills with the ability to set priorities, collect and document project requirements, successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies in documentation and project data.
    • Aptitude for communicating (written and oral) technical and program concepts to clients, contractors, consumers, and other interested people or organizations.
  • Technical competency:
    • Familiarity with building systems (lighting, mechanical, utility systems, building envelope, energy distribution) and willingness to expand technical knowledge.
    • Building science certification a plus.
    • Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with CRM or database applications is a plus.
    • Experience with utility programs, energy efficiency, or compliance/quality control preferred.
    • Familiarity with project design and construction processes. Experience with cost estimating, purchasing and closeout is a plus.
    • Affordable housing, low-income/disadvantaged community, EV charging, and/or demand response deployment experience is a plus.
  • Other:
    • Eligible to work in the United States.
    • Certification or membership related to the building or energy industry is a plus.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
