Rock Energy Cooperative is a not-for-profit electric and natural gas cooperative headquartered in Janesville, WI, with a district office in South Beloit, IL. This position is based in the Janesville office. Rock Energy serves approximately 20,000 electric and 9,000 natural gas meters across 8 counties in Illinois and Wisconsin. With annual revenues nearing $70 million and a total utility plant of $180 million, Rock Energy also holds financial ownership in a natural gas generating facility and the area's transmission company. Janesville, a city of 65,000, is situated between Madison, WI, and Rockford, IL, offering all the amenities of a large city, including excellent schools and healthcare facilities. It's also just a short drive to Milwaukee and Chicago.
Essential Functions:
- ????Prepare monthly and annual financial reconciliations, financial statements and appropriate tax returns.
- Assist with financial planning and annual budget preparation.
- Evaluate the cooperative's financing and capital structure.
- Assist with the annual financial audit and complete the workers' compensation audit.
- Perform risk management by analyzing the organization's liabilities and investments.
- Assist in the establishment and improvement of accounting & finance procedures and processes.
- Ensure cash flow is appropriate for the organization's operations.
- Assist with processing accounts payable, including weekly check runs.
- Process annual 1099s.
- Prepare monthly sales & use tax returns for both Illinois & Wisconsin.
- Manage vendor accounts including setting up new vendors, maintaining W-9s and COIs.
- Process bi-weekly payroll ensuring cooperative policies, federal & state laws, & union and nonunion agreements are adhered to.
- Manage payroll, payroll reporting, and payments of payroll taxes.
- Prepare and distribute W-2s.
- Assist with member rate development and implementation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, cooperative policies, and bylaws.
- Back-up cash management, miscellaneous receivables, and other accounting responsibilities as identified.
- Supervise accounting department personnel in the absence of the controller.
- Report directly to the controller.
Requirements and Skills:
- Proven experience as an accountant, assistant controller, finance officer, or in a relevant role.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and FASB accounting principles.
- Understanding of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) system of accounts is a plus.
- Excellent knowledge of data analysis and forecasting methods (Tableau experience is a plus).
- Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software.
- Electric cooperative experience is a strong advantage.
- Ability to strategize and solve problems.
- Regular daily in-person attendance is required.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- An analytical mind, comfortable with numbers.
- CPA is desired.
- BS/BA in Accounting, Finance, or a relevant field required.
