Auria is looking for a Chief Engineer to serve as the principal technical authority for the design, development, integration, and operation of a Common Ground Element for next-generation satellite ground systems. This role requires deep expertise in space and ground system architecture, secure cloud-native deployments, and multi-language software environments. The Chief Engineer will lead and mentor engineering teams while ensuring successful execution of system-of-systems integration, model-based digital engineering, and government interoperability requirements to enable end-to-end space mission operations.
This is a remote position with a preference to be located in Colorado Springs, Co, or Huntsville, AL.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO:
- Lead system architecture, design, and integration of Common Ground Element aligned with Government objectives.
- Direct development of ground software in Python, C++, and other modern languages, ensuring modular, cloud-native, and cyber-secure solutions.
- Oversee deployment in secure cloud environments, achieving Government Authority to Operate.
- Manage ingestion of spacecraft telemetry, health/status, and situational awareness into a common operating picture.
- Drive adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) within the Digital Engineering Environment (DEE), including ICD/API schema development and validation.
- Collaborate with Government SEIT and cross-vendor performers to ensure open, standards-based interoperability.
- Provide technical leadership during Gate Reviews, TIMS, and system demonstrations (requirements, prototypes, integration).
- Mentor and direct junior engineers, fostering technical growth and consistent delivery of high-quality engineering products.
- Assess program risks, define mitigation strategies, and ensure compliance with mission assurance standards.
- Plan and organize test events, demonstrations and system releases
- Support program schedule refinement.
WHAT THE TEAM REQUIRES:

- Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Preferred 5+ years of experience in space and ground systems engineering, including constellation command & control and mission-critical software systems.
- Proficiency in Python, C++, and cloud native microservices (containers, Kubernetes, REST APIs, CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps).
- Experience architecting and deploying secure mission systems in commercial or hybrid cloud environments.
- Strong knowledge of orbital dynamics, satellite telemetry, and ground-to-space communications
- Experience in risk management, requirements generation, and test strategies for DoD, NASA, or NOAA programs.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to support mission needs.
- U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance.
WHAT THE TEAM PREFERS:
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, software management tools, and source code repositories such as GitHub, GitLab, and Jira.
- Familiarity with MBSE tools (e.g., Cameo), PlanutUML, Sphinx, LaTeX
- Knowledge of antenna-as-a-service architectures and secure data transport layers
- Excellent communication skills with ability to interface with Government stakeholders, vendors, and program offices.
PAY TRANSPARENCY: The salary offered will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications - skills, education & experience - and the position level. $145,000 - $200,000.
