General Description of the Job Class



  • Performs managerial, professional, supervisory work directing pastoral services


Duties and Responsibilities of this Level



  • Maintains continuous and comprehensive assessment of spiritual care needs in all clinical areas. Manages and directs an effective pastoral program.

  • Provide instruction and supervision for the Chaplain interns and residents, and also Chaplain fellows in Supervisory CPE. Coordinate with other teaching hospitals in North Carolina in the planning and implementation of an ongoing supervisory colloquium for Chaplain fellows engaged in Supervisory CPE.


  • Plans, develops and implements program policies to provide formal and informal religious services for patients, employees, and attending families.
  • Confers with hospital administrative staff and department managers and hospital personnel to determine needs for pastoral services, to explain the established policies and procedures, and to solicit cooperation in program objectives.
  • Coordinates chaplain services activities with activities of other departments to avoid interrupting medical care and to insure adequate spiritual help for the patient.
  • Serves as liaison between hospital staff, family and friends of the patients during periods of crisis, such as in critical or terminal illnesses, or personal and psychological adjustment and preparedness for surgery.
  • Serves as liaison with pastors, congregations, community agencies, and professional service clubs to provide a community resource and to secure their cooperation.
  • Provides in-service education to employees and students. Supervises Chaplains and students and volunteers in the Chaplain's office. Oversee the orientation of new chaplain interns and residents on spiritual care in the hospital
  • Completes performance evaluations and development plans for employees.
  • Reviews department performance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to effect continual improvement in services provided; and assures compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Promote development awareness of patient satisfaction scores on spiritual support and coordinate in-service for other departments on spiritual issues in health care
  • Plan and coordinate projects in spiritual care

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education




  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • Masters of Divinity degree from an accredited Seminary or Divinity School and four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Completion of an accredited Supervisory CPE Program.


Experience



  • Three years of full-time pastoral experience.
  • Two years experience as Associate Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor, supervising and teaching Chaplain interns and residents.


Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification



  • Eligible for Board Certified Chaplain by the Association of Professional Chaplains.
  • Certified as Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
  • Ordained or commissioned by one's faith group or denomination.
  • Denominational endorsement as 'Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Extensive knowledge of various denominational religious principles and practices.


  • Extensive knowledge of techniques in counseling and interviewing.
  • Thorough knowledge of hospital organization, operation, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop, plan and administer a pastoral service program to meet hospital and community needs.
  • Ability to listen, understand and minister to the specific spiritual needs of persons in crisis.
  • Ability to function as a member of the health care team, interpret and communicate to the hospital staff the religious significance of illness and the religious resources and concerns of the patient.
  • Ability to minister within the hospital environment in such a way as to exert a definite and positive influence on morale and well- being of all the hospital staff.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Ability to relate to persons from diverse cultures, religions, and all ages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, patients, relatives, internal hospital departments, other employees, and local clergy and community groups.
