DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION * Provides direct spiritual care, counseling, crisis intervention, and pastoral support to patients, families, and staff across all health system facilities. Respond to referrals, assess spiritual needs, contact patients' faith leaders upon request, and ensure spiritual care aligns with and does not interfere with medical treatment. * Serve as On-Call Chaplain for medical and spiritual emergencies. Collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams and provide coverage for chaplain colleagues as needed. * Perform religious rites or coordinate appropriate faith leaders to fulfill such requests by patients or families. Lead interdenominational worship services as needed, schedule chapel functions and visiting clergy, participate in interdisciplinary committees and patient conferences, and document all services in the electronic medical record in accordance with department policies. * Provide day-to-day supervision for Staff Chaplains and Pastoral Care Volunteers, including oversight of work assignments, service coverage, and productivity. Monitor professional development and certification needs of chaplaincy staff. * Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and orientation efforts for new chaplaincy personnel. Facilitate team meetings, daily huddles, and debriefs to support communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement. * Act as liaison between the Staff Chaplains and department leadership, sharing updates, operational needs, concerns, and opportunities for improvement. * Promote a team culture rooted in compassion, respect, and ethical practice. * Assist department leadership in managing the Spiritual Care budget, tracking spending, and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. * Maintain inventory and orders supplies required for the delivery of Spiritual Care services, including worship materials, religious literature, devotional items, and communion elements. * Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care. * Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health System policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes. * May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Master's degree in divinity, theology, or a related field. * Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or another appropriate professional association within two (2) years as a condition of continued employment in this job classification. * Three units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs. and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs. This role may also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
